Safety Stats

Discussion over on the Airlines and Routes thread about how Virgin's new trains will impact on MAN/LHR services. One contribution compares relative safety of air and rail travel, claiming the former to be 27 times safer. I'm assuming this is correct, though I doubt the multiple, and is based on casualties per 100k (or million/billion) pax/vehicle kilometres.

Does anyone know where, ie websites, I can access comparative figures on other bases eg casualties per passenger/vehicle journey?

No agenda, just trying to improve my understanding of the subject and of stats proving anything.

www.google.com might be a good start :)

Seriously, I wouldn't recommend any one site or any one set of statistics over another. The author(s) are usually trying to advance their particular agenda, and depending what metric is used, you can pretty much 'prove' any mode to be the safest. Well apart from motorbikes, which seem to be at the bottom (or top) of everyone's list.
