The good old days

I keep reading/hearing that the job of an airline pilot “just ain’t what it used to be” (a fact I don’t dispute). But I am curious to know what it was like before?

When were the good old days and what were were they like? What were the pay, rosters and conditions and what made it so much better than it is today?

Cheers,
HaM
