Undercarriage - Tyre Wear

Is there any facility on bigger aircraft to spin the wheels up before touchdown and save a lot of strain on the tyres? Mate of mine said there was but I've never heard of it.

No sweat, the question gets asked in one or other of the forums about three times a year!

We're just getting it all out of the way in one month - streamlining you might call it.

If anyone's still reading, I have a quick follow up question:

It was said a few days ago that one of the reasons that undercarriage don't have spinup motors (or whatever) is that the initial wheelspin on landing actuates the autobrakes and spoilers.

Another thread about goarounds says that it is possible for a plane (specifically an airbus) to have toga selected even after a touchdown. Surely after a touchdown all the paraphanalia of landing has fired off, committing the aircraft to the ground?

How does all this work?
