Don't you find it annoying that the 'ON GUARD' police spend more time blocking and using the Frequency than anyone else. personaly I find it quite funny when you here 'ON GUARD followed by a 'your on guard as well' then followed by a chain reaction of the anti on guard police with the I phone monkey sounds

Always makes me think of the 3 Muskateers whenever I hear it.
However, during the world cup games, the number of calls on 121.5 asking for score updates got a bit ridiculous. There was even a point when we were flying somewhere near Bordeaux during a semi-final when some bright spark kept the mic open for just over 90 seconds (we timed it) just with Vuvuzelas.
It might be an irritant in the cruise but in arrival or departure (particularly somewhere busy like London area) it can result in missed calls etc and normally means I turn Comm 2 down ... sometimes it is well into the cruise before I remember I haven't been monitoring it.
PS - not sure this is either a Rumour (I'm sure it is a fact) or News (been going on forever) - so standby for Jetblast diversion.

Yes, it is very annoying. As are the "Tarzan" and the "Burp". To answer your inquiry: To ease operation we turn down the volume - so we don't hear it. The frequencies in central europe are way to busy to allow for distractions. If one day we think it's too silent - we'll listen on 121.50. Silent cockpit

The guard police can be annoying (particularly when you are on 121.5 for a good reason, such as broadcasting a mayday or trying to contact an unresponsive aircraft on behalf of ATC), on the other hand sometimes a pilot will not realise they're transmitting on 121.5 and will keep on going until some kind soul lets them know what's up.

I don't have a problem with it! Personally I think it's courteous to let the crew know. What's worse, someone calling "Guard", or the offending aircraft making multiple calls before realising that they're not on the correct frequency?
More amusing is when an aircraft makes a call to company on 121.5, and someone chimes in with "Go ahead..."

I can remember, a very long time ago, when, on guard, we heard this very clipped voice say, "Ladies and Gentlemen, you may now smoke", needless to say he was thanked profusely by all who heard!
