When do they start to pay you?
 

I'm currently trying to budget plan for my ATPL training and was wondering at what point the airlines start to pay you.

If you complete ATPL and then get offered a type rating course do they put you on full pay from day one of the course or do you have to pass the course and be on the line before you get paid?

Also do they pay you anything whilst in a hold pool? - I'm just trying to work out how long I need to eat gruel for!

Depends upon the employer.

First up, no you won't be paid in the hold pool.

Most airlines will pay you from day one, unless, it is someone like ryanair, when you arent paid to start, and then go onto half pay. Details readily available on here via search.

Other airlines may require you to do a type rating with them to get the job, probably same story, only get paid when the type rating is finished.

If you are getting an airline job with 200hrs, chances are you will be on some sort of sponsored course, so I wouldnt expect to be on full pay asap....

You can normally expect to get a salary from the date your contract of employment commences. Once the type rating has been entered into your licence, and line training starts, a further increase may occur. Duty pay will also be paid. Whether this is during line training, or on completion, will depend upon what your contract says.

The way the industry is at the moment, don't give up the day job just yet. The modular route might be regarded as a safer option unless you are self employed and can return to work after a full time course is complete.

Which ever route you follow, then keep current at a flying club until you finally join the industry and start your apprenticeship.
