am I the only wannabe who isn't in IT.

If I ever make it as a pilot I am worried that I will be sat next to IT bores 10 hours at a time.

also this isn't an IT website ... its PPRUNE (sorry to point out the obvious) so if you wanna talk IT :mad: off

As an airline pilot, you should expect to sit next to people you don't know or don't like. Perhaps there will be an age or social gradient. You might have nothing in common with any other members of crew.

This is a basic human factors problem. Perhaps if you can't deal with this, you should consider another career?

Yes you are correct - this is pprune. However, with such few posts to date, it may not have come to your attention that there are many forums on this site. Jet Blast is one such forums where (almost) anything goes. Perhaps those people should stop using this site also?

I think you will be more qualified to speak once you've matured slightly.

I suspect that this thread is going to have a very limited shelf life....

There have been a lot of useless posts on these forums of late and I’m sure some are wind ups, however I am starting to think it would be worthwhile paying a small sub Just to prevent people coming on here and posting pointless rubbish.

If you have looked into the possibility of becoming a pilot I am sure you will realise people come into the profession from all different walks of life. If you don’t think you can handle that then don’t bother training and save your money.

Its called life.

I'm a software developer (See profile) however, I don't take offence at your comments.

I find that IT is the only thing I can do that doesnt strain me in any way shape or form and earns enough money for me to fly!

what is wrong about asking what people currently do?

I think it is very valid! - especially to all othr wannabes

For one thing I know that what I currently do won't give me the £ I need to sponsor my self. - ie £70K - £100K

I would be interested to know occupations of existing wanabes.

In many of the aviation intrviews I have attended an high emphasis is placed on interests, past experiences etc. Believe it or not what you do now is relevant to both these points!

and yes I know this post has been put out before... but you telling me that the majority of Wannabes are currently in IT!?

Sorry Muggs, I'm an IT bore.

For fairly obvious reasons, the percentage of IT workers who are IT literate is higher than the average across the whole population. So the portion of IT-worker wannabes on these forums will probably be higher than the proportion of IT-worker wannabes in the pilot population as a whole. Common sense really. Also, we all sit on our backsides in front of a computer all day, so we have more time to post than many other people.

I hope I'm not an "IT bore". I think of myself more as an aeroplane bore than an IT bore! But I'd guess the reason you're getting hostile replies is because you asked the question, initially at least, in a hostile tone.

the interviews I have attended include:

so I have experience - maybe a little too much!

I did not post the thread to compare experiences or ambitions! Just curious to see what people do!
But I'm sure PP will be interested in what I am planning all the same - ... I am waiting for the right time to bury myself in debt - which incidentally isn't now (PP you can use your fancy "quote" thingys here - and question how determined I am) - The reason for this descision is based on my own extensive research, and personal descisions.

... judging by the number of replies I'd say this is a relevant and interesting thread, close to people's hearts - maybe a little too close to PP's! - maybe he would like to tell us what he does currently! - as afterall this is the subject of the thread!

its kinda strange that the people who slag this thread off aren't telling us what they do for a living!

My post earlier is in response to my realisation that whenever a discussion about current employment arises the IT brigade dominate - I would like to know of wannabes who are currently doing something other than IT.

TV jobs are badly paid - always have been - so I don't have a spare 100K lying around at home

This is proving to be a unique insight into people who use this website

So far only 3 people haven't taken offence about this post ... the rest have tried to argue with or patronise me.

What you do or have done in work doesn't necessarily define who you are or a personality. I do not take my work home with me as a rule. It could be equally as tedious, for example, to sit next to someone in the cockpit who reeled of the names of everyone famous he's ever met while working in television production...

I have worked in IT, recruitment, event management, union work, report writing and even newspaper delivery when I was younger.

I have borrowed heavily to do what I always wanted to do and now have a frozen ATPL in my hands. Surely the cockpit reflects many personality types and long may it be so. If nothing else you almost certainly have one thing in common with the person next to you on the flightdeck…namely the desire to fly!

The reason I started this thread is that I find this website dominated by ITers - someone earlier in the thread has offered a reason for this.

now, I would like to know what people do out of interest...and I hope that there is a diversity... people in the arts, bakers, butchers, tinkers, tailors ... PLEASE if you have a job outside IT please say

Muggs, I've got no idea what Dufwer means, it's just a user id. And you have probably guessed correctly that I'm another wannabe currently in IT. You tell us we are bores, goons, :8 , and should :mad: off if we want to talk IT. What kind of response did you expect? Are you making a documentary and doing a bit of reseach on pprune? Looking around pprune and around my flying school I see a lot of people who are or have used IT as a means of funding training. It's a fact of life that IT can pay the bills and sometimes very well.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Considering how few posts Mugs has made, it would suggest that he/she is trying to stirr up something for their media purposes.

How did I raise the cash?
Full time job. Lab technician at university. (Biology). No degree.
Around this job I studied and flew part time. Other jobs I have held (part time) to help pay for the mortgage and fly include;
Bar attendant, bouncer, school cleaner.
It made for some very long days but I had a goal.

Shifted to the other side of the country to try for a full time flying job. While I was waiting for that opportunity, I washed aeroplanes and cleaned the hangar.

After shifting to the UK I did ops part time to get a foot in the door and put some food on the table.
It worked.

So, no IT here I'm afraid.

No Mugz, you can't slag off someones career because you think its boring, and then ask others to pander to your request by telling you what they do.... You sound rude and arrogant.

(I don't work in IT though, so I'm not being precious)

Personally IT was a means to an end for me to earn enough money to fly. It was interesting trouble shooting but... It's a bloody thankless job where you are ignored when its good and hung when it goes pair shaped.

The golden years are gone now as companys discover that all the marketing !!!!e from MS was rubbish. And Y2K has been milked dry.

To be honest the only reason why us IT bods earn as much money as we did is because people did find IT a bore and couldn't be bothered using it, OR started living in cloud cuckoo land developing projects which where tenious in the out set as cost viable.

Most of us can't be arsed talking about IT away from the work place, we are even more boring and talk about flying all the time.

There is only so many storys about how thick users can be and what the latest drug trip the managment have been on.

Bastard operator from hell pretty much sums it up.

Anyway the numbers of IT guys will drop years to come I think as the pay packets come in line with other occupations and the !!!!e you have to put up with isn't worth it.

Now if I was going to look at a job to pay for flying it would be an opticain or a chemist (shop proffesional)

Both have huge opertunities for very well payed locum work. Both can get you earning over 35K a year within a year of graduating. And both qualifications don't run out so if you are unemployed for a few months as a pilot you just bite the bullet and go back to earning 200 quid a day. Where as IT and the rest of the techie proffesions you need to keep current to get back in.

Thank you for your contributions - it has proven what I had first thought - that a large proportion of wannabes are currently in IT. As a bonus I also discovered the reasons for that!

As long as the person sat on your left is amiable, willing to offer you constructive advice and work as a team, and help you along as a rookie I dont think their previous life is relevant. I'm sure being in IT has its uses when it comes to trying to analyse complex system failure faults though. A tendancy to adopt a more analytical state of mind is one attribute.
You make it sound as if anyone in IT cant talk about any other subject , although I know to a certain extent what you mean. Every occupation has its "bores" that just wont stop talking shop. You could always talk about football, politics, women, cars, economics, ...fishing.............no not fishing.
I know many accountants socially and i can tell you they are by no means boring.

I'm in IT, and I do it because I get paid £55ph to read pprune. You on the other hand, (unless you're the producer of the Simpsons or The Sopranos) produce crap. You also sound a bit uptight - starting to worry about your drinking at all? :yuk:

My initial post is hardly a very serious one - and it was mainly in response to another thread which I read - dominated by IT people talking IT!

This thread has highlighted alot of things about Wannabes forum.
- Alot of wannabes are currently in IT
- Judging by the threads that have followed - IT people have no sense of humour
- & that IT people are paid a small fortune, therefore it is an excellent way to fund training.

I've also learnt that all those IT people out there (who earn a fortune playing on PPRUNE) clog these threads with talk of IT, unfunny banter and personal arguements - which have no relevance to PPRUNE at all! AND THIS THREAD PROVES MY POINT! - which was the original reason for the post!

In response to this post I am sure that a barrage of personal jibes will follow, probably insulting my family, lifestyle choice and what football team I support!

If your initial post wasn't serious then why post it here? Jetblast would probably have been a better place if you were just out for a laugh. I know I spend a fair amount of time down there. Let's me exercise my sense of humour. Surprise! I'm in IT and I have a sense of humour. Does that blow your theory?

As far as insulting your family, life-style choice and football team is concerned, you'll have to provide more info. So far all I know about you is that you don't like IT people and seem intent of pushing your point of view.

As to the point you are trying to make, yes, it is obvious that a large number, possibly even the majority, of wannabes on this forum are in IT. The very nature of the work puts people in a position to spend time on the net. No big surprises there. Unless you really want to talk more about IT and IT bores I don't see the point of continuing this thread.

In your initial post you didn't ask what people did for a living, you just aimed an ill-informed broadside at those in the IT industry. If your sense of humour and personality are so well-developed perhaps you'd like to take them over to JB.

I'm not in the IT industry and can barely use a computer. I would not wish to work in IT personally but equally do not make the inane generalisation that all such people are boring. Being in IT does not make you boring, it's your behaviour that does that.

It's a job dude, I work in IT and I'd like to fly professionally, IT gives me the money to pay for it. I suspect that a lot of folks in IT want to do something else!

However, I don't go slagging off other's professions or their motivations, but isn't this what we expect of media types!

When I (and I hope many other Wannabes) log on to this website I want to read/talk about people's pursuit of there dreams ... being a pilot, and thier experiences in that pursuit. I don't want to talk/read about IT - which I have done more than once in many threads.

Many (if not most -judging by this thread) Wannabes are in IT, and therefore IT may bare some relevance to some Wannabes. But I find a small clique of people fill threads with useless and irrelevant material - hense the reason for the original thread.

The responses only prove my point. I worded my original thread so to guarantee responses!

It is kind of sad that so many people have responded - because its this type of thread which I hate to read! - But it seems to be becoming the norm!

Now, before this thread reduces into "my jobs better than yours," and "my car is faster than yours," I will make a plea for people to stop talking IT, filling threads with rubbish banter and irrelevant topics.

Those who have slagged me and my career off, have only proven my point further.

So you have got the exact response you were looking for. Congratulations. But what exactly was the point of the thread. You knew the answer before you started. I’m sure that everyone who has looked at the wannabe’s forum for a while would come to the same conclusion. All you have really achieved is to create another thread about the exact topic you claim to dislike. Sucker for punishment perhaps?

I’m sure people will stop slagging you if you stop posting provocative responses.

The laugh is if you get to fly Airbus or any of the modern jets, that machine is a whole lot of IT systems in a pressurised cigar tube :D

BY the time you have learnt all there is to know about EFIS, FMC, negative/postive feedback control loops and the like your will be able to hold your own with any IT bod.

I have read a number of your replies on this thread. Most of them have the same theme - they suggest some subtle, deliberate undertone to your original post that everyone except you has picked up on, and one that was fashioned with intent to create a response.

This is utter nonsense and quite frankly your constant backtracking and inability to know when to back down has become embarrassing. Just admit that you were incorrect in the first post then let it be.
