B I R D T A M S ? ?
Does the Birdtams exist? Do you know a any reference for that?
Thanks |
There is no such thing, it's a trick question on a JAR Operational procedures ATPL exam.
The one about bird reaction times has apparently been taken out of the question bank as so many people complained |
Apparently - it came up in the Dec ATPL's !!!!

Thanks.
The guys from Bristol have to be careful because in their feedback they have the wrong answer in that question. |
I suggest you take a look at this pdf file (rather a long download though) http://safety.kirtland.af.mil/AFSC/Bash/Sub_html/bsc99_germanbam.pdf http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/bat.gif

BIRDTAMs do exist, do a Yahoo search for the word. I would like a reference for the format though, if anyone has one, it is not in the ICAO documentation.
The 'bird question' should have been removed from the JAA exams in the UK because no-one could find an authoritative reference for the answer. If it comes up in the exams again let your groundschool provider know and they will have a go at the CAA on your behalf. My feedback says the question was/is Q. Studies of bird behaviour on the ground have shown that, with an aircraft at approximately 135 kt taking off, the birds will fly away: (a) 2 seconds beforehand. (b) 10 seconds beforehand. (c) When they hear the noise of the engines. (d) At the start of the take-off run. and, again lacking a reference, we went for (a) purely based on experience. I would be very interested if you have a reference for the original study the question refers to. |
Yes BIRDTAMs exist, as do SNOWTAMs etc. I do not know about ICAO but they are recognised by EUROCONTROL (not sure if they are just free text or have ASTERIX and/or ADEXP formats).
Do a search on the above terms. Here is a link to a Eurocontrol EATCHIP pdf file relating to ab-initio training mentioning ( in section 5.5) SNOWTAM, ASHTAM, BIRDTAM and FLOWTAMs)as being in the required syllabus. (I do not know the formal status of this document.) www.eurocontrol.int/eatmp/humfactors/docs/T5-HUM.ET1.ST05.2000-GUI-01.pdf |
Apologies for giving the wrong info, I was just repeating what I had been told on my ATPL course
|
Came up in my Ops exam a couple of months ago. It was one of those questions where it gives you a list of possibles where you would find information on birds - then you had to pick the answer with the correct combinations - ie: i,ii,iii,iv etc. Birdtams came up as an option in every answer, so could only assume from JAA that they DO exist!!
