RT Upgrade
i'm going thru the motions of upgrading my FAA PPL to JAA and need to sort out the RT licence asap
beyond buying a receiver and an anorak, can anyone suggest a good manual/text book for the exam? sadly i've been brainwashed by american apathy when it comes to the airwaves, so i think i'll probably need a major makeover before taking the test any advise or suggestions will be most appreciated |
The R/T test is based ENTIRELY on procedures and phrases laid out in the CAA publication "CAP413 - Radio Telephony".
The book is released every year - with amendments. Next year, for example, will include the phrases "late downwind" and "fanstop" (neither of which are accepted as being in use at the moment - even though some do use them). The book should be available from any flying school for £6.50 Would strongly suggest some groundschool at your local club before attempting the test. I'll e-mail you some notes that should help. |
thanks for that GoneWest - i'll give it a look over
i just wondered if there was something out there like the chapter in the jeppensen manual, where it guides you thru a flight, pinning certain calls to specific instances guess the real solution is to just get up there and find my feet - i was simply worried about the ATC peeps in the UK, who i hear can often come down hard on bad phraseology but thanks again |
Trust "Gone West" on this one mate - the oral is entirely based on the the Cap 413 and whilst not entirely different UK RT is not exactly the same as the the US either....
I have to also agree that an hour refresh or practice with your flight instructor would be useful too. The actual exam is quite straightforwrd but for some reason still nerve wracking - practise the emergency procedure cos your pretty much guaranteed you will either have a problem or have to relay a problem. Good Luck |
Try these two Safety sense Leaflets as well:
