Good Question...?

Any takers..

did u fill in the medical form prior to your final board. on the form it asks for a score in the ishihara plates test, so if they accepted u for a final board with a less than perfect score in the test then presumably they will not expect a perfect score if u then take the test at their medical. i don't actually know the answer to the question but i would assume they would offer an alternative to the plates seeing as they have accepted u knowing that u may not pass the ishihara test.

cheers
Rod

If you already have a Class 1, and have passed the Lantern Test at the CAA then as far as the CAA are concerned you are fit to fly.

However, (as I understand it) if you fail those STUPID plates at the BA medical...then BA don't have the facility to perform the H.W. Lantern Test in house. As to what they will do, I haven't got a clue......sorry!

However, if you have passed the H.W.Test..then let them know and take some documentation to support it.

If all else fails, do what I am going to do......Piss off to America, where colour perception is not a major issue.

However, on a final note however, be warned. In the UK, for those who are colour deficient, there are only TWO tests for a Class 1;

The Ishihara Plates & the Holmes Wright Lantern test. There are NO other alternatives.....fail both of these and it's curtains! And don't be fooled by anyone else telling you otherwise

If you want anymore info.....please feel free to E-Mail me, as I can provide some additional advice, especially in respect of the US system.

Kind regards, & good luck.
C.N.

I remeber going down to the CAA for my class one and sailed through the medical apart from the colour blindness bit! i failed the ishihara plates test although i did pass them at the opticians and doctorspreviousley, then to nake matters worse i failed the H.W.L test first time round. The optician said that it can be sat a second time, and he bundled me into a dark and told me to keep my eyes shut until we were back in the darkened testing suite where i went through it all again, and the swine didny say anything for ages but im glad cos he just got up gave me a slip of paper said congrats and walked out!! i had passed.I collared him later on and thanked him , but also asked him about BA Medicals he said they use both tests but they like you to tell them if you failed the ishihara one so as not to waste time

Yes I had to do the Lantern test

I passed and then said to the CAA examiner

'I can see why people find that test difficult as the small aperture whites
look greenish..'

The guy had a sense of humour failure
and said

..they shouldnt have done ...

I half expected him to fail me retrospectively

but he didnt...

B@stard - he could have saved me a bomb in cash
