JAA ATPL Manuals
Hi
Wonderng just how many people would recommend me to buy the full set of 15 JAA (Jepessen) ATPL manuals costing more than £500 for my atpl studies. How much will it help? Would it be a good reference through out my flying career? worth the money? Your replies are appreciated, thanks in advace. |

WITH REGUARD TO THE FULL SET OF ATPL MANUALS ......I HAVE 3 OF THEM AND THEY PUT MY ORIGIONAL TRAINING MATERIAL FROM MY TRAINING PROVIDER TO SHAME. THESE MANUALS ARE THE BEST I HAVE SEEN AND WORTH EVERY PENNY.....I AM TAKING 3 RESITS AND THESE SHOULD DO THE TRICK FOR ME GOOD LUCK STEVE |
I am not sitting the ATPL yet, but got some of the manuals and have read parts of them. The material seems very in depth. Other people I have spoken to say Bristol's and Oxford's Material is the best.

Remember you will have to buy an 'approved' course to take ATPLs anyway - this will include a set of notes, so these ones would be purely for reference.
Might be useful if you are thinking of going to a groundschool with grotty notes, but I shouldn't bother with them if you're going to use Oxford or Bristol, which I can vouch for being excellent. I can't imagine one would have much use for them once you've passed the exams. I doubt our esteemed moderators carry their old ATPL notes on the flightdecks of their 737/747! |

Wait until you have received and used the manuals that will be issued by your college for a couple of weeks. Buy Oxford manuals only for the subjects inadequately covered in your issued manuals. I have heard that some of the Oxford manuals, while no doubt beautifully written, edited and produced, do not cover the whole syllabus. I do not know whether this is true, but this is another reason why you should not buy Oxford manuals until you have something to compare them with. Best regards, |
I have it on good authority that
"If its not in the Oxford manuals it wont get asked in the JARs" The reason being apparently that the JAA asked for Oxfords help in creating the syllabus/notes and now use them as a yard stick for the exam question bank. I would be interested if anyone has come across a question in JAR that couldnt be answered from the Oxford manuals. Dufus |
Following on from Broomsticks good advice,
Wait and see how you go with the notes supplied by your course provider. If you feel you could do with some 'extra' then selectively purchase one volume on a subject. You'll either benefit from a slightly different approach to explaining parts you find tricky, or realise that your course providers notes are quite sufficient. Probably somewhere in the middle. A bit better than throwing a load of money at the whole set for an unknown benefit. Also its unclear from your post whether you have embarked on the ATPL course yet, and some time spent on the search engine learning about what people have said about the different ATPL course providers will be well spent. Whichever course you are on, there will be a lot of material to get through - will you have the time to read the same things twice, explained through different styles? Regards, Laurie. |
ATPL Notes
Good call getting the OATS and Bristol ATPL notes. Sod whether your FTO is giving you (in your humble opinion) the required material - often on the integrated route they do not. No pack drill, no names.
At all the integrated schools the majority of the students have purchased these notes from the above FTO's regardless of their own company issued notes. VFE. PS: Dufus, Altimetry is becoming the "in thing" with JAR at the present time for Met. Without an instructor who can set nasty examples for you then probs could occur in the exam. IMHO OATS notes alone will not cover every possibile route in this area - good as they are in other sections though. |
