Recommendations?
 

Hi guys,

I'm from Glasgow and have been looking into doing modular training to work myself up and into the airline industry.

Anyways, my point is, I've had a search on both this forum and on Google for schools near myself. I've found a few that do modular training and one that does both modular and integrated; AST (Air Service Training).

Are there any schools that anyone would recommend that are within a decent traveling distance and are reliable in both training and being "acceptable by an airline", so to speak?

I have heard Tayside is good, but that's too far out.

Went to ACS flight training in Perth. Had a great experience from PPL-CPL/IR and left the school and secured a job flying 737's. I also have a friend who went to Tayside Aviation who works for the same company as myself and doesn't have a bad word to say about them

Was it integrated or modular you done there? Where you staying near?

Did they have everything you needed or did you have to go anywhere else for any licensees?

I did the modular route and completed my PPL all the way up to CPL and IR with ACS at Perth. I commuted everyday from the central belt although there is accommodation at the airfield. You can complete everything there apart from the last stage the MCC course which is around 20 hours in a sim. Integrated wise I know many people who have done that route at AST. All say the same , that the flying side is great but the groundschool is not as great at rival integrated schools.

ACS Flight Training are starting from Glasgow January 2014.

Are they?

That would make my life much easier than having to travel up to Perth all the time.

Are you starting with them?

Can't imagine it's going to be cost effective learning at Glasgow. Imagine the touch and go fees; the waiting around at holds. Abz and Edi don't have flying schools at them - I guess there must be a reason..

Has anyone been and done their commercial training at Cumbernauld? If so, the reviews on it?

I went up to ACS in Perth in September and I have to say I was really impressed by the entire setup. From the CGI right through to the lady in the reception they go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

If Cumbernauld is near to you Ginger then go in and speak to them as one of the guys I spoke to there has just completed his CPL/IR at Perth.

I also visited Tayside at one of their open days in February this year and while they said all the right things they say the school has a partnership with Loganair. Whilst this may be true Loganair also recruit a good number of pilots who trained with ACS/AST so don't get sucked in by that. They also have a lot of instructors who completed their licenses with integrated schools and are only working there until an opportunity comes up with Loganair. That just didn't sit right with me.

You can't do the commercial side of training at Cumbernauld Ginger. All commercial training is done in Perth. They do have a skylodge onsite that you can use for £19 per night which was more than reasonable in my opinion.

There is no commercial training offered at Cumbernauld at present.

Perth it is then? I don't think Prestwick do it either.

You should certainly arrange to visit them mate. The only downside to the PATH programme is their is no funding assistance but I think that's the same for most places unless you go to Oxford or CTC. They certainly have excellent pass rates for the programme (I think all students this year achieved 1st attempt passes in the skills tests)

Yep. Its ACS (Air Charter Scotland) Flight Training at Perth and Tayside at Dundee for commercial. They are the only providers of CPL/IR in Scotland. Border Air may be starting CPL courses at Cumbernauld and/or Carlisle but I'm not sure when.

I completed my CPL/IR training in early 2012 I went on to complete an FI rating and have been working as a PPL instructor there for just over a year. I don't mind if you want to PM any q's (I can put you in touch with some recent AST students as well if you'd like.) Even from my corrupted ;) view I would do my training there again. :DAs always I'd recommend visiting everywhere first then deciding from there.

RJ.146 The only problem is the driving up all the time. I stay in Glasgow and its a bit of a commute to Perth all the time. But its a sacrifice I suppose I will have to make.
