Transfer of type/class ratings from a non-jaa state licence
Hi everybody,
Here is my question : Is it possible with a frozen EASA ATPL to do a non EASA type rating in US and then have it on my licence ? It used to be possible with 500 hours on type when you just had to do a test with a JAA Examiner. I'm not sure what is it like with EASA now ? I asked the CAA but Im still waiting for the answer :ugh: Anyone wants to share his/her experience ? |

According the text you've mentionned, it says :
A valid class or type rating contained in a licence issued by a third country.... The thing is I do have a licence issued by the UK CAA, so at the time I will request to have the type rating (carried out in US) put on my EASA licence, it wouldnt be "contained in a licence issued by a third country" Its confusing ......... :ugh: |

I don't have an FAA licence, only EASA.
I wanted to know if it was possible to do a non-EASA TR with an EASA licence, go in Africa, fly and when I would reach 500 hrs, do a test with an EASA approved examiner to have it on my licence..... |
It seems you are making it complicated. If you are getting the type-rating now, just do it at an EASA approved facility and you are done. What you are talking about REALLY, means that you have to get a FAA license, do the type-rating, do your 500 hours and then yes, you can put the TR on the EASA certificate.
But getting your full FAA certificate and the TR is going to take you as much time and money as an EASA TR. So you seem to be creating your own dilemma. If you are thinking that you can get a non-EASA type rating, without having a FAA license to "stick it on," and somehow combining a non-EASA type rating with an EASA certificate and fly on that, the simple answer is no you cannot. A type rating is applied to a certificate and if you don't have a FAA certificate, then you don't have a TR. |

Thx FerryPilot,
That was exactly my question. |
This is indeed a very confusing issue to which the CAA has not been very clear on. We have recently had two separate customers come to us for exactly this and both got told opposite information from the CAA themselves. The good thing is though that the CAA have backtracked on their decision not to accept other ICAO IRs, which otherwise would have caused huge problems for many pilots flying in other countries or other licences.
In your particular case, What licence are you expecting to fly on? If you do not hold another licence and intend to fly on your EASA licence, any endorsements must be EASA approved or will not be valid. If on the other hand, you get a TR or another ICAO licence, then yes after some experience on type, all you have to do is sit an LPC with a EASA approved examiner and simulator. This will also cost a small fortune so if you have intentions to fly on your EASA licence, its best to do an EASA TR to save the lengthy paperwork process and have peace of mind. |

Thx,
I expect to fly on EASA licence. I wanted to be sure because the price difference is huge when you compare FAA and EASA. My only solution is to do an EASA type rating since Im not gonna jump on an CPL FAA course. As for the CAA, Im still waiting for them to answer me ....... |
