rule of thumbs for holding pattern

What method do you use for assessing your turn in the hold to inbound track?
I was taught 60 degrees before your adf needle should be passing through your inbound track and 30 degrees before your adf should 10 degrees below inbound track, rolling out and needle settles on inbound track.
Anyone use this method ??

I use 90 deg & 45 deg checks for the inbound turn (holding or base turn to final). At 90 deg left to run the ADF needle should be about 10 deg above the abeam marks (ie the 90 deg point). At 45 deg left to turn the ADF needle should be about 5 deg above the 45 deg mark.

If more than the 10 deg/5 deg reference then I roll wings level and wait for the head of the needle to fall. If less then I increase the rate of turn &/or expect to need to re-intercept from the other side after passing through the required track. I also judge the rate of needle movement vs rate of heading change but that's just experience & familiarity to develop a feel for how it's going.
