Thanks for this.

I am looking details of where I can find a JAR instructor in California - they don't necessarily have to offer JAR courses.

Anglo American Aviation Academy in El Cajon is a JAA school but it changed hands a couple of years ago and the new owner talks a big game but there isn't the follow through... I did my PPL there with the old owner and I still live in California. I can recomend one of their ex flight instructors who is JAA and FAA, so ticks all the boxes. PM me.

Alternatively Aviation Pacific is also JAA and is now affiliated to CATS (Cranfield). I was there the other day using their sim, they are very keen and have JAA instructors. You can even sit the JAA exams there.

No, it is not. Aviation Pacific is merely a sub-contractor to CATS, which holds the approval. Failure to understand this distinction has caught people out in the past - for example, when Atlantic Flight Training walked away from Delta Connection Academy some years ago.

I stand corrected and do agree, Aviation Pacific are not on the CAA website as an approved JAA school. They do have a couple of Italian JAA instructors there and you can sit the JAA exams there as part of CATS at Camarillo college which I am hoping will save me a flight to Gatwick airport at somepoint.

American Aviation Academy (formerly Anglo American) is a JAA approved school and I did complete my JAA PPL with them as well as my night rating a couple of years ago. I recomended it to a friend of mine recently who completed his night rating there in November. There is one man there who is British and their examiner who is great and knows all the regs inside and out but he is not part of the day to day running of the place.

Unfortunately with the name change came a new owner who is full of himself, chaotic and is running it into the ground, it's just not the same since Chris Watson left...

I just stumbled across this thread now. I've recently had a very nasty experience with AAA. The way they treated me was disgusting. I won't publish the story here, but I'm quite happy to tell it to anyone privately who might have a concern with them.

There's an independent CAA examiner in Phoenix named Ian Davidson, which might be the next closest person available if you don't find someone in California that can help you.
