How do you register for JAA exams in UK?
 

Hi Folks,

I'm flying oversea right now but I'd like to start taking the JAA ATPL exams in London. What's the procedure to register for the different sessions they organize. I browsed the CAA website and I haven't found any info regarding the exams schedules, fees and registration process. Any help appreciated. I am not going through an approved ground school provider, I'm just studying on my own since I meet the criteria for self study.

Mate as far as I am aware and I stand to be corrected but I dont think you can do it that way .
You have to be on an apporved course of either full time or distance learning study . That is because both includes elements of progress tests and mock exams of which you have to complete prior to being allowed to take the exams . The DL phase also requires a specific time in the classroom prior to taking the exams .
I am not aware of anyone taking these exams by just signing up and turning up .

as far as I'm aware you do need to be registered with a school in order to take the exams (though please correct if wrong)

Im with CATS just now and at my brush up there were quite a few guys with licences from abroad who had only enrolled in order to sit the exams, would recommend calling one of the schools who im sure would be happy to put you in the right direction!

I still think you need to register through a school even though you will be exempt from the classroom element. Have a chat with Bristol Groundschool as I believe many that they have quite a few students in your position going through them.

If you qualify for exemption from the training requirement you do not need to register with a school.

Just go to the CAA website and serach for and download forms

SRG1108 Exam application Form
SRG1192 Exemption Certification Form
SRG1187 Payment Form

Fill them in and send them to the CAA.

You can also download the exam dates, venues and application deadlines.

ATPL with 1500 hours PIC or Co-Pilot on a mutli-crew Aircraft.

For full details just go into the caa website and search for

JAR FCL 1.016(b)

The above is all true, as long as you have the 1500 hrs multi-crew, no formal g/s or enrollment required. Fill out the forms mentioned above, fax them to the CAA and you should be set. They will send you a confirmation.

Anyone have any info if this can be done in USA as well? There is a test center in Lakeland, FL. Can these forms be submitted to UK CAA for that test center?

How about someone with an FAA ATPL & ICAO ATPL from West Africa with over 3500hrs on B737 and TR on both license.
Does that candidate for the JAA ATPL have to register with a school and write all 14 exams.

Yes you can use the Florida exam centre. But the application form is slightly different. The booking must be made through CAA International, which I believe is just a sub-set of the UK CAA. Do a search in the UK CAA website for details.

As long you have an ICAO ATPL with at least 1500 hours on multi-pilot aircraft you do not need to sign up with a school.

As I said in my previous post, go to the UK CAA website and search for JAR FCL 1.016(b). You will get a PDF with all the details.

You will of course need to do lots of preparation, because many of the questions are far from "real world stuff". You can do this by using one of the many on-line systems or interactive CDs. I produce one of these which is available directly from me or through most of the UK pilotshops.

Was told only had to do Airlaw and Human Performance and Limitations due to time and experience on type over 20tons. But looks like all that was just stories, Im down to all 14 then...

I have a vague feeling that I have heard of this quite recently here on pprune. But if I racall correctly it was for a UK ATPL rather than a JAR one. I'm afraid that I do not know any details about this scheme or even if it really exists. But if it does exist then the details should be somewhere on the CAA website.
