Has anyone here used Phil Croucher's JAR Professional Pilot Studies Book. If so, can you comment on whether its a good buy and why.

I think I'll go for the one that's on Ebay. It's the previous edition, but apparently the only difference is the new one is larger in size. |

I am currently reading the said book and I recommend it! I like it for the simple fact that it's a short version of many ATPL subjects under one book. Fairly easy to carry, so I tend to use it to do some revision during work lunch breaks... :} |
I use the newest version of Phil's book. I wrote to Phil to ask him about the differences between the 2004 and 2008 versions. Here is his answer:
The 2004 one included helicopters, but it is now fixed wing. It has also gone into a larger page size. The absolute latest is on my website, Electrocution Technical Publishers - Books for computer and aviation professionals. otherwise, the only difference is colour or B & W The 2008 version is mainly fixed-wing, but there are references to helicopters now and then. The book is easy to read and provides a great overview of the material. My ATPL course material is excruciatingly detailed, which is great, but one can get lost in the detail. Phil's book is a great way to get an overview and then use the course material to dive in deeper. I went for the color-version which is more expensive, but it is certainly better when looking at the graphics. The book can be purchased at Electrocution (Pilot Training & Ground Studies - Electrocution's Aviation Books). Go to the bottom of the page. A word about Electrocution. It is a site that allows author's to sell their publications but the books are printed once an order is placed. My book had some missing material, such as sentences that did match when the page was turned. I emailed Phil and he corrected the problem promptly. Great service from his part. I have an extensive library of aviation books at home and I bought this one as I am converting my FAA certificates and needed a JAR perspective. This book meets those requirements and I don't expect the need to add more publications to my shelf. Definitely recommend it. |

I thought I ought to mention that the older versions, while still valid, do not have all the recent changes in the question bank that have taken place. However, they are still a good overview. The absolute latest version will be posted in the next week or so, after some changes caused by the above mentioned questions. Also, the colour one is only available from my web site above - if it went through the retail chain it would be prohibitively expensive and this is the only way I can keep the cost down. In answer to the question, the ISBN is 0-9681928-2-3 and it is available through all bookstores via Gardners books. I only have 2 of the older versions left - the one after the one that BALPA liked. Just bought it from amazon but they sent me the wrong book! cheeky people sent me the Private Pilot book, equally brilliant but not quite what I'm after!!

Paco your older edition of the book is great. I will probably invest in the latest colour one. It would be nice to see a few of the colour pages before purchase. Is this possible?

The book is based on my approved JAA Helicopter ATPL(H) course (in fact it is the course notes with POF and AGK changed for the dark side :)), so the answer would be yes. Any italic text has at least a tenuous connection with a question ;)

This book is great, very convenient to carry around, although i did find that it didn't go into anything like enough detail on gen nav to be able to do the exam. The rest of the chapters contained a good amount of info and it's all straight to the point, it's good as a complementary study aid but not enough on it's own ;)

I looked at my copy, and to be honest I'm not sure which version i have. Inside the cover it says copyright 2005, i'm guessing it maybe the first version. Don't get me wrong, it's a great book, but i found it useful when used with other study aids and books. :ok:
