Non protected holding side...

Hello,

Does anybody know the exact dimensions of the "protected airspace" in regards to holding procedures?

I was asked what the tolerance on the Non-protected side was and this got me thinking - there must be some protection as the parallel entry requires you to actually fly on the Non-Hold side - it can't be zero tolerance....so what tolerance is it?

Can't find any mention in the AIM.

Thanks for your input.

Hello there,

as far as I can remember, below 14,000ft there's an allowance for a 36Kt omni-directionnal wind, plus a buffer area of 5NM where Obstacle Clearance reduces from 1,000ft to 0.

Allowance is also made for average instrument error and average pilot skill.

More accurate information should be available somewhere on the web, try a search like "instrument procedures design rules".

Hope this helps.

Cheers.
