VFR IFR Comms exam TODAY....need answer
 

What is the correct way to transmit and read back frequency 120.375 MHz (VHF channel separated by 25 KHz):

Is it ONE TWO ZERO DECIMAL THREE SEVEN FIVE

or ONE TWO ZERO DECIMAL THREE SEVEN

I've seen both these answers as correct and now I'm unsure what the JAA think is correct! Do you leave of the FIVE if it has 25Khz separation?

Chapter 2-pg 4 section 1.4.4

All six figures shall be used when identifying frequencies irrespective of whether they are 25kHz or 8.33kHz spaced. Exceptionally, when the final two digits of the frequency are both zero, only the first four digits need be given.

Clue in the question - if you are asked to read anything back, you read it back exactly as you were given it. Simple, like us pilots. :}

Problem with Pipergirl's answer is that the ATPL exams are not written around CAP413.

That would assume a continuity in this industry - and that will never happen even in one country, never mind pan-JAA.

What's is the concensus on the following
If being asked to change to a 8.33khz spaced frequency which of the following would you hear?
Contact Stephenville Tower on 132.010
Contact Stephenville Tower on frequency 132.010
Contact Stephenville Tower on channel 132.010
People are saying that for 8.33Mhz spaced frequencies you use the word "frequency" and for 25Khz spacing you don't, I wish this was in my notes as I can't find this specific bit of information anywhere.:sad:

The confusion has arisen because you used to have to refer to frequencies with 8.33KHz spacing as 'channels'. i.e. the actual frequency 132.0833Khz was referred to as 'Channel 132.010'. This requirement has now been removed. There is no requirement to call any frequencies 'Frequency', although it is often done. Thus 'Contact Tower frequency 132.010' would be as correct or as incorrect as 'Contact Tower 132.010'.

CAP 413 is miles ahead of ICAO Annex 10 in setting out a workable standard for R/T but it is not mandatory and there are often several equally acceptable forms of R/T. The question you are referring to used to test the use of the word 'channel' when it was mandatory, I don't think it is still used.

Well this question came up today in my IFR Comms exam, I went for "Contact XXXX on 132.010" and not "Contact XXXX on frequency 132.010" It also had two other answers with Channel in them, if I recall correctly it was ( I can't recall to whom it was addressed to but I sure this is not important, let's just say "Tower"):

a. Contact Tower on channel 132.010
b. Contact Tower on channel 132.0089
c. Contact Tower on frequency 132.010
d. Contact Tower on 132.010

The others in my group seemed to go for answer "c". I must admit to hovering between answers "c" & "d", but after reading what you put answer "a" would seem correct too.

Would this be worth contesting?

Alex thanks for the confirmation, I will be contesting this question on Monday, unfortunately I didn't point it out at the time but that was purely because I thought that the answer I put was the right one, it was only on exiting the exam and talking to others that I realised that it caught others out too. Nobody could remember this being taught or emphasised in the syllabus at all.

Was just wondering what happened when the question was contested... I was also in this exam and answered (C)... apparently there is no mention of what to do in Annex 10 so maybe (d) would therefore be the best answer...
did anyone have any luck contesting??

apparently the answer the CAA were looking for was answer "d" i.e. the answer without the word "frequency" so far they say they are not going to budge on this one, but if more people have contested it, it might get awarded. We'll wait and see,

...luckly I put "d" but either way it was still a dodgy question
