Sim practice anyone?
 

Hi, I've just booked a few hours with Dan Brownie down at the European 727 Sim.

It's on Wednesday 23rd.

Would prefer to make the session at least 3 hrs, so if anyone is interested in getting some practice in...
Even better would be if you wanted to do an hour or two PF as well.

The sim can be put in your logbook (if you want to build up those hours), and it will cost £150 per hour including instruction.

I can only afford to pay for 2 hrs really, so hoping someone else will be able join me on the day and keep the cost down.

I did my MCC course on the tristar sim, amazing aircraft. Its £250 an hour (or was), had a go on the 747-200 sim aswell ( £400 ph) and the sikorsky s76 is £150 ph, also great fun.

These prices were correct in 2004

So as prep for airline flying is the tri star worth paying the extra £100 for? Or is the 727 just as good? Anyone flown both??

Yeah I've flown both. The 727 is more like the 1-11 sim i suppose, although nothing prepared me for the manually set Flight director and manual trim in the 1-11. The tristar is great to get a feel for heavy jets.

They're both good but i'd go for the tristar.

Having used various simulators around the UK and Ireland both before and since finding employment, I can honestly say that if you are looking for some 'affordable' quality sim time, then go to OATs and use their full motion Frasca 737. Ok it is not an official 'full-flight' sim, but it aint that far away from the real thing, and the price is only around £200 per hour, Including very good instruction.

I Have recently used the 727 at Bournemouth with a friend of mine who needed a couple of hours of pre sim-ride experience, but there was very little in the way of instruction given, and the basic price does not include the 'motion'!! If you are expecting a sim ride with BA on the BAC 111, then the 727 is about the nearest thing at the moment (since the trident at Biggin is u/s), and they do have an ex European 111 sim to look at!

As far as sims in Manchester go, the 146 sim at Woodford is around £500 per hour and they don't seem to be interested in allowing non airline use. Alteon in Cheadle has an EMB 145, B757 and A320/30/40 which can be hired (for leisure use) through www.virtualaviation.co.uk from £250 (for 20 mins at the controls)!!

Another alternative is www.yorkshireflightcentre.co.uk they have a 737-200 for hire costing £240 per hr.

I'm getting an hour in that 737-200 sim at Yorkshire Flight Centre for Xmas from my g/f.

Anyone been on it before ?. If so what's it like,Full Motion ?.

I've only got a ppl and 52 hrs so far, just passed class 1 and received module 1 of the ATPL's. Will I find it useful doing it now to get a taste for things to come or will it be a bit of a waste of money at this stage ?.

Also am I able to log the hour ?.

Ok I'm a geek that works in IT. I never thought my two interests would ever meet. Through my work I met a young and probably disturbed man who on a visit to the sim room of an airline heard them discussing the dismantling of their old 747 sim. He immediately offered to take it off their hands and is now the proud owner of the sim. He's worked on it for a few years and has added new instruments, fully functioning FMC, instructors station etc. It's not full motion but he's adding feedback to the controls as we speak. It's quite a remarkable piece of kit.
Is this any use to me or other student pilots? I would think so but my concern is that it's a 747, there's a lot of throttle levers. I could use this for about 50 Euros an hour. Before anying jums down my throat I know I can't log the hours but to be hoest I wouldn't anyway.

I went on the sim in 2003; I had 1hrs at the controls. It was a great experience - the instruction was interesting and educational, and it is full motion sim.
You're not able to officially log the hour, since that simulator is not 'approved' (may have used the wrong terminology there), but it is good fun and a taster of flying an airliner.

I had quiet a lot of time on the 200 and found it like flying a cessna with an overhead panel. Im now on the 737-800 now that the dog's bo**ox.
