PPL in the USA

I would be grateful if someone could tell me if an I-20 is needed for just PPL training in the USA. Most schools reckon 4 weeks is about the length of time you need. is it possible for a UK national to do a PPL on just a regular tourist visa?

Thanks in advance

I do believe that any flying training or study in the United States requires an M-1 visa. Any school telling you otherwise, I would doubt.

It is a fairly painless exercise, or it was when I did it last year.

tomjrobertson - As I understand it you can't do a course of study in the US under the visa waiver programme - I assume that's what you mean when you refer to a tourist visa? As CAT3C said, you need an M-1.

To be sure check this which is a link to the US embassy non-immigrant visa site. Also contact your school in the US who will first have to issue you with an I20 form that says you're eligible for a visa.
