cover letter or no cover letter

Hi!. .. .I was wondering what people think about enclosing a cover letter with your resume. Is it worth it or not?. .. .Thanks!

RG. .. .The average CV probably has about 15 seconds to make an impression before it goes in the 'to think about' pile or the bin.You need a letter to get the recruiter’s attention, and that letter has to be tailored to the job that you want with that company. The CV itself is probably more general, but I do know of people who change theirs for each application. . .. .You have to answer the question of ‘what can this applicant do for the company’ and you have to make that recruiter want to take things further and meet up with you. The letter has to stress the good points that the recruiter will want to see, which are not necessarily the good points you would use to impress a girl/boy friend’s father.. .. .If you want to e-mail me some more background, I’ll be more specific. . .. .Good luck!

Regional Guy,. .. .You can call it what you want; cover letter, CV, resyme or application. The object of the exercise is to catch the decision maker`s attention to the point where he/she says: yes, that one I like. Believe me, whatever you do, make it short and direct to the point. The recruiter does not want to read a book. A straight up and down CV/application/resyme with a catching design would probably take you to the next heat. Off course, you have to be qualified for the job, but that comes without saying.

A fistful of tenners might help matters, esp. if you are applying to the Ryans!. .. .Seriously, a concise, CV-enhancing, hand-written cover letter is much better than a CV alone. CONCISE, mind.. .. .Good luck, and keep trying.

Thanks guys!. .. .I'm right around the stage where I can apply for the regionals over here in the States (just about to get my permanent resident status), and I've heard different oppinions regarding cover letters.

Or even better Regional guy go and bang on some doors. I would say banging on one door is worth 100 cv's.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

SkyGuy: I would agree that knocking on doors is a whole lot better in the corporate world (which I think I'll do as well). However, I'm not so sure it's going to get you that far when it comes to the airlines... Oh, and by the way, anyone with a success story regarding knocking on doors and getting corporate jobs out there?
