Are Mod 1 much harder than Mod2?
 
Mod 2 v Mod1.

I have just got my results for Nov ATPL exams (Mod1) and have now passed them (3 attempts) just about to get stuck into Mod2, and was wondering, from anyone who has completed ,if Mod 1 is harder than Mod 2.

The dinitive answer, in a nutshell, and to not put too finer point on it........it depends!

Personally I found portions of both easy and the rest hard, it very much depends on how your brain works...or not!

So the simple answer to your question is it very much depends on your good self!

Erm, which school? Each school splits the exams up differently, so Mod 2 at one school will not have the same exams as Mod 2 at a different school!

Congrats on passing the first half, though! :)

Horses for courses I think DJ - if you have a knack for a particular subject then it's a piece of ****. Airframes and Systems is Ok - don't be put off by the amount in there - the nasty stuff is all the fire extinguisher and life rafts kack:
"how many do you need for a double deck aircraft with 394 people, 2 cats and a gerbil on board?"
unfortunately there's no answer option that says "sufficient".

Personally I found Performance to be a bitch and Ops Procedures is just Air Law in a cunning disguise. Good luck with the rest of the swotting.:(

Mackmeeter is correct - I found Air Law a real struggle, even failed it first time. Now some of the people I am teaching Navigation to who find my subject really tough feel Law is a breeze (with the same instructor I had!).

Best of luck with the second lot - Bristol was a good choice for distance learning. Advice for flight planning (the other subject I teach) - know where to find information in CAP 697 and the Jepp. Become familiar with the maps and what they tell you, and with each graph. I'm sure Alex will make sure you do.

Well, for what it's worth, I'm nearing the end of Mod 2 at Bristol, and I found Mod 1 easier, although more work.

I'm not the kind of person who can learn facts. That means that I find Air Law, Ops Procs and certain parts of Radio Nav very difficult. On the other hand, I'm good at learning concepts and ideas, and I found Gen Nav and Flight Planning very easy.

I know people who are completely the opposite to me, though, and who can read a chapter of Ops Procs and immediately commit all the relevant details to memory, but have really trouble getting their head around chart divergency. It all depends what type of learner you are.

One thing I did find, though, is that Mod 2 goes much faster than Mod 1. You read a chapter of Air Law, maybe re-read it to make sure you remember the key points... then that's it until you come to revision and brush-up. Much quicker than Mod 1, where certain subjects can take several readings and weeks of banging your head against a wall before you understand it.

for me, in bristol, module 2 is much much easier than module 1.
i think it depends of your experience but the hardest subjects to study was the gyroscope and inertial system, and weather.

Having just completed frame 7 of Mod 2 - The progress tests will be on their way to Anouska in the next 5 minutes I personally feel that both modules are similar in their level of difficulty. It is generally held that Mod 1 involves more in terms of mentally understanding concepts and calculating things, whilst Mod 2 is more heavily weighted in terms of learning weighty tomes of information - although in reality of course there is a mixture of both in both the modules. I am finding Performance and Principles of Flight a bit of a ****** at the moment, but recall having similar moments on Mod 1 and it all still fell into place eventually.

Just keep plodding on. I have heard it said that the Mod 2 brush up is easier than the Mod 1 brush up although once again I suspect that has a lot to do with the kind of learning and thinking that you are more adept at. Before starting all of this I would have put myself in the 'better at remembering facts' camp - but sometimes now find myself thinking that maybe just learning principles that need to be applied to situations is preferable.
