Flybe

Morning

Could anyone please shed any light on what to expect at the first stage aptitude tests for the flybe part sponsorship scheme. Would appreciate any help going!

Thanks

SK

SK,
I'm still waiting to hear if I'm going yet...

However, last year there were 2 mental maths papers and 1 mechanical comprehension paper (multi-choice) and as far as I know they're likely to be the same format this year.

The maths papers weren't hard but brush up on things like basic mental maths (tables, addition etc.) and more advanced stuff like trig and interpolation. What I did was get a GCSE Maths revision book and work through that to sharpen up. The second paper contained an aural section where the questions were read out with various lengths (between 10 and 30 seconds) allowed answering time.

Hope this helps and hope to see you there.

Ay up, VTOL! Long time no hear! You alright?

Has anybody else heard yet? I haven't.

MB :)

I'll be there, got a letter today with the details. Mechanical comprehension, mathematics, physics & aural mathematics tests to come - sounds just like last year.

VTOL 8th Nov 2002 09:42

Hey Monkeyboy - very well thank you and your good self? :D

I'll be there - the letter was waiting for me when I got home.

Sorry, SK, I forgot about the Physics paper - again about GCSE standard.

See you at Cranfield :)

All,

could you please help me out with these GCSE levels, since I never went to school in the UK and I'm not familiar with this standard, nevertheless I'm taking part in the second round at flybe/cabair.

Could you please give me some detailed info on what to expect from the questions?

Any idea were I can find info on GCSE standard and which subjects are covered by it?

Thanks for your feedback.

Got my letter through this morning so ille be popping down there on the 21st as well. For those of you that have been there before - how many other candidates are likely to be there? Does anyone now of anybody that applied and didn't get through to this stage?

cheers

Bull

GCSEs are the exams you take before you leave secondary school at the age of 16. You normally take between about 7 - 10 exams and get a grade between A and C for a pass ( A being the best)

ALL major bookshops have GCSE revision books for Maths and physics

Bull 9th Nov 2002 22:40

pythagoras,

thank you for the info.

Problem is I don't live in the UK so no books for me, but I think the level should be no problem than since I just finished my MSc.

Could some body tell a little more on these second stage questions?

Thank you,

bull

Thanks guys, help much appreciated.

Just spoke to a mate. He reckons BE certainly get their money's worth. Looking into it suppose they do!!

See you all there

appearance

What does everyone wear to these aptitude exam sessions? Common sense, and past threads, tell me smart casual, but, if I show up straight from work in a suit, or direct from my bed looking a bit rough, either of which would be easier, would I stand out like a sore thumb?

I'm also thinking, do they take any note of candidates' appearance at this stage or is it just a huge, impersonal, exam hall type situation?

monkeyboy 20th Nov 2002 08:46

Play it safe, carb, and stick with suit.

You'll find you won't stick out like a sore thumb if you suit it.

Good Luck with the tests.

VTOL 20th Nov 2002 14:48

Just to re-affirm what monkeyboys says: if you wear a suit you won't look out of place. I certainly shall be "suiting it"!

Good luck to everyone - see you there.

suits me

Good good, suits it is then. Should make it easy to spot other wannabes in the student union afterwards (or before!!!).

VTOL 26th Nov 2002 08:21

Anyone heard anything yet?

speedy688 26th Nov 2002 08:27

Not heard a thing, despite them saying the letters would be in the post last Friday morning! Still, I suppose it keeps the suspense & excitment around.

VTOL 26th Nov 2002 08:32

There is a curse. They say: "May you live in interesting times!"
:D

pythagoras 26th Nov 2002 09:28

I've not heard either. It was all a scam. All a lie. There is no sponsorship. They have taken all our £50's and gone on holiday.

Afterglow 26th Nov 2002 10:42

I like you had heard nothing so I gave CABAIR a call the letters were supposed to sent yesterday (Monday) so we should hear soon!!

carb 26th Nov 2002 12:05

Well, I got a letter today! Good news, I won't have to visit Cranfield again ;)

Fair enough... I'd just been bungling around hopelessly with the mechanical comprehension paper... was all good fun though!

I found the earlier papers easy - I have A's in A-level physics and maths and did some at uni - except I hadn't a scooby about a handful of questions which frankly seemed of little relevant to aviation, eg, units for measuring radioactivity, and which planets are in the inner orbit or and what's SEPT or something? Why'd they bung those in there? Seperates the sheep from the goats, but I'm not sure sheep have a better aptitude for ATPLs than goats.

Another thing I'm curious about - when the guy read out one of the aural maths questions with 25degs but then said 45degs the second time, which was the right number to use? Was it a deliberate trick? And the questions involving the tristar performance table, should we have assumed a/c packs ON or OFF?

Good luck to everyone who has yet to hear!

speedy688 26th Nov 2002 18:14

Got my letter also. 'Banging head against brick wall' springs to mind. Getting a bit sick of these damn sponsorships & rejections.
