IR Renewals and autopilots
Heard a rumour that under JAA you can renew your IR and use an autopilot.
Can anyone confirm this, and also if it's true, are there limitations to it's use? Regards S |
Splat,
I have a feeling that one of the approaches can be coupled, but one must be hand-flown - I'll have a dig through the JARs for it (got my nose in them today during a poor weather day on the FIC course). cheers! foggy. |
If you don't mind Foghorn, where you doing the FI course?

Dunno about on smaller things although I assume it is the same - on the 757 LPC / OPC you can use the automatics at all times at the discretion of the examiner, apart from
i) Single engine GA ii) Single engine Landing iii) Single engine ILS We normally end up doing hand flown ils to GA then a non precision with automatics to a manual se landing. Oh and autos are normally put in after clean up after EFATO. |
expedite_climb,
Thanks for that. I should have made clear that I was refering to the single pilot IR, not the multi. The thing is that unlike in the US, one was never allowed to use it, and I've heard that that has now changed and was looking for some clarification, and hopefully comments from someone who'd used one for a renewal. Regards S |
You can use it in the en-route section but the approaches (from localiser intercept if radar vectored or from joining the hold) and the EFATO must all be hand-flown.

Ray Ban - Cabair at Biggin Hill - not the cheapest but very thorough one on one tuition.
Splat - I drew a blank in the JARS - I'll look a bit deeper sometime |
You can indeed use the autopilot for the en-route section from the moment it is legal to do so up to and including localiser intercept. Both approaches are hand flown.
Remember that if you do decide to use the autopilot you get tested on its use as well. Make sure you do your pre-flight checks according to check lists etc, otherwise you might well have a case to answer. However, when it comes to it most candidates elect to hand fly the whole thing. Taking control to hand fly an ILS to minima after having monitored the autopilot for 30 minutes is not all that easy. Cheers |
Autopilots and IR renewal
Actually you can use the Autopilot till glideslope capture.
