Seeking advice for return from 10 year hiatus
 

I hope this post finds you all well. I'm writing on behalf of my father, who unfortunately doesn't have internet access at the moment but is now getting back into the world of aviation. He has a wealth of experience and is looking to return to flight instructing after a long hiatus.

To provide some context, my father was a captain for 25 years after transitioning away from flight instructing around 30 years ago. His last official flight was back in August 2013, which means he's been out of the cockpit for just over a decade. He has well over 10,000 hours of flying experience under his belt.

Now, he's set his sights on returning to flight instructing, and we're looking for some guidance on what it might entail in terms of time and cost, considering his extensive background in aviation. He's based in the UK and intends to complete all of his training there.

Obviously his prior experience will likely make the process smoother and quicker than for a beginner, but we're keen to get an idea of the rough timeline and expenses involved. We're particularly interested in insights from those familiar with the UK's aviation regulations and training system.

Any advice, recommendations, or personal experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated. Whether it's regarding the reactivation of his flight instructor certificate, flight hours needed for currency, ground training, or any other relevant information, we're open to hearing it all.

Wish I could answer your specific questions but I can't.

However, I can offer encouragement to your dad in his effort to rejoin the aviation world. The industry needs his experience so it can be passed along...too little of that available today. I applaud his energy and motivation to do that. And since he's done instructing in general aviation, he knows what he's getting into.

I also explored a similar journey but when I saw what's involved, I just laid down on the couch and watched TV.

Most of those questions can be answered by simply going to a flight school and asking.

Otherwise, I can only agree with bafanguy. Good instructors are in short supply.

Before spending a bean on the flying, obtain a medical. Depending upon what instructing your father has in mind, either a class 1 or 2…
