38 with 3 fails, still worth it?
 

Hi all,
I`ll soon be turning 38, and the aviation bug is still with me every day.
Every since I was a boy I wanted to fly and just be around planes, till now I was never able to afford the training.
Any way, ff over the boring details, I got my PPL, NVRF and also my UPRT and have some hours under my belt so I started my ATPL.
So far I have gone trough 3 ATPL sessions with not so great results.
Mass and balance failed.
Performance failed once and passed it second time.
Flight planning failed two time
Operational Procedures failed two times.
So that makes it 3 subjects failed and 6 fails in total.
Of course the end goal would be the fly as a professional pilot and make a living out of it, but considering my age and that I failed so many times on the theory I`m having second though on weather should I still pursuit this or let it go.
I know is never to late to start any thing and all that, but, given my situation is it?
Any though, ideas or advice is much appreciated, thanks.

Keep Going.
Over coming adversity is a desirable character trait in a Pilot.
If you have exams outstanding get some tuition, One to one, if required.
Aviation is in a lull at the moment but it is a cyclical industry.
It will get better and busier. Most companies want someone with a licence.
While some might ask about a Ground school failure or three, most don't care.

Hi Alex,
As a retired ATPL theory instructor I can tell you most students get through EASA ATPLs eventually, some take longer than others & 38 is not too late.
What you don't mention is how many more subjects & exam sittings you have remaining, this is somewhat critical as to a future plan.
I see you have failed M & B & FP both these are number crunching subjects, what's your maths like & have you passed GN yet?

I should start off by talking to your current course provider (ATO) & discuss your problems with them, clearly you are going to need some extra help be that with your ATO or private.

If you want to be a professional pilot and have a 25 year career ahead of you doing arguably one of the coolest jobs around - then continue.

If you don't then give up.

Fails don't mean what ever student would have you believe. I have a masters but still failed a couple, one multiple times. As others have said above perseverance in the face of adversity means more to most. I would suggest getting a tutor for the tricky subjects and try to avoid a last chance saloon with sittings. Otherwise chin up, you got this and good luck! There's no doubt that the airlines are going to need pilots, everyone is poaching from Ryan, the US is facing a massive shortage and as soon as the big airlines start to see their bottom lines struggling due to staffing issues the hiring will have to ramp up! Now is the time!

No I disagree. They are serious but three early fails seems far too many me so I can understand the OP thinking that maybe they are simply not up to it.

However. I suspect that the OP is not preparing for exams sufficiently. Are you studying by yourself or at a school? Do you have access to practice exam papers?

I would go to an ATPL school or get some ATPL tuition, and certainly some test papers to get your mind in gear and your speed up.

You need to be schooled in each subject by a teacher, and practice each subject exam several times under exam conditions before taking the real thing.

Practice practice practice.
