DBS Check from Overseas
 

I've been accepted into a school in the UK and in order to start the course they say that I need to have a DBS check done for the issue of a airside pass. Since I am not based in the UK I have a few questions about how I can satisfy this requirement as the DBS seems to be catered for people living/that have lived permanently in the UK. I don't have a National Insurance Number (NIN) which is required to have a DBS check done and I can't apply for a NIN from overseas. I have a British passport.

From the DBS website, they have Responsible Organisations which seem to collect and submit your information to the DBS. Are these organisations able to conduct DBS checks for people overseas?
Would a check from one of these services satisfy the requirement for the airside pass?
Has anyone used any of these services before?

Or am I able to get a background check done in the country I'm currently in and use that for the issue of a airside pass?

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Are they asking you to do the DBS check yourself? Or just they need your info to carry out the check?

You, or the entity requiring the DBS, can ask the British Embassy or High Commission in the country you were residing in to request and authenticate a criminal record check from that countries authorities, that should then serve as the DBS. You'll need to provide them with the ID info in the country you're requesting the records from. Alternately you could go to the authorities where you are and request a criminal record check, or whatever their version of it is, but then you'd likely need to get it authenticated and apostilled for it to be accepted. If you go the route of getting the checks yourself, make sure you check with the relevant UK authorities what would be acceptable beforehand, as you can end up wasting time, effort and money! (I speak from experience!)

Also find out how far back they need the check to go, if you've lived in several countries you're going to have to do this process for each of them, unless they are only requiring records within a certain limit of time.

You're also likely to have to provide additional proofs of identity in order for them to request criminal records from overseas and to authenticate that the criminal record provided does indeed belong to you!

As far as I know these companies can only access information held by UK authorities.

EDIT: Just browsed a couple of their webpages, some of them do overseas record checks, but it seems only when working for companies who are requesting checks, not individuals.... I would imagine if they did do it as a personal service, it'd be pretty expensive! Maybe worth your while browsing through all of them to check see?

I was able when coming back to UK to have a notarised translation of a local criminal record certificate for the countries worked in before returning, translated by a professional.

Depending on the country, this can be surprisingly cheap. Both countries are wanting to join the EU (this was when the UK was a member) and the Embassies in London were happy to help in the event of any questions.

It was about 7 years between re-joining Easy and leaving for my current company, so the same problems didn't exist. A standard 'Basic' check and letter from the company were enough for the (EU) country I'm resident in now when we moved, even post-Brexit. I'd worked for this company at a UK base for around 5 months on base transfer.
