PPL training on a motor glider?
 
Hi, I spoke today with a few schools and it looks like I can do my PPL by doing the majority of the training on a motor glider which will cut cost significantly. My goal eventually is to do my CPL and ATPL. Does this path offer a PPL that is recognisable and would allow me to continue with the rest of the licenses or does it affect my chances in the future?

From what I understood is that I can get an EASA PPL with TMG rating and then I can convert it to PPL (SEP). Is this the same as a standard PPL?

You can indeed get your initial PPL on a TMG then convert to SEP. This will give you the PPL that you require to start the fATPL process. Bear in mind that you can (from memory) only count 30 hours TMG towards your 200 hours required, meaning you'll still have to do 170 hours SEP flying. I'm assuming you'll have to fly now than 30 hours to get your initial PPL on the TMG, which of course means you'll ultimately more than 200 hours. That will eat away at any savings you make in the first place, so do the maths and see what makes sense.

As for "is it acceptable?" - Yes. Airlines aren't likely to care either way how you got the licence, just that you have the appropriate one. If anything it'll give you more to talk about at interview.

If you're considering this route to save money, just be aware that there are other alternatives that are much cheaper still...

Thanks rudestuff for your answer, I’m not sure about the minimum hours as well but thanks for pointing it out I’ll speak with the instructor to clarify this point further.

You mentioned other low cost options, can you please elaborate?
