Which Open University Degree??
 

Hey all,

So given the current situation that all of us newly qualified pilots find ourselves in, I have opted to work on the super yachts for the next year or so until jobs start to reappear for us guys. However I am going to have a lot of free time in the evenings and was thinking of doing an open university degree... anyone done anything like this related to aviation and can recommend?

I don’t think that you should confine yourself necessarily to an aviation related subject.
Choose a subject which interests you, and broadens your outlook on life.

Think of it as Plan B if aviation proves to be a non starter, and work towards your Master‘s ticket in the marine world.

Avoid courses which come under the broad heading of “Underwater Basket Weaving”.

Second that - Learning is so much easier when it is interesting.

Some of the questions you first need to answer: Why are you looking at doing a degree? What are your aims? Are you looking at becoming chartered in a profession? How much time can you dedicate to study?

Also, cast your net wider than the OU. Many reputable universities offer DL courses.

I did an OU degree in Psychology while I was working. It is a very flexible way to study and they are very well set up for distance learning. If you want a degree that is recognised by professional bodies, your subject choice is slightly restricted. (Eg Psychology was guided by the BPS).
This helped me spring board into CRM instructing. I'm about to start a Masters in Aviation Human Factors at Coventry Uni. It's all distance learning which suits me.

Why Psychology? Human behaviour is absolutely integral to how the flight deck operates but more importantly, we're humans and understanding how we think and interact was very interesting.
