I worked as a part time butcher's help and a milkman while at school, then as a builder's labourer for two years after I left. I was also a keen cross country runner. When I began RAF Officer training I was fitter than the butcher's dog. The far less physical training regime of the RAF, compared to what I had been used to, resulted in me becoming slightly less fit and I was criticised for it!
