CRP-5 or E6B for EASA ATPL
 

Hello guys nice to meet you, I am a young student 21 years old, from Denmark, that has started some months ago on my modular course, and I really love this flying thing and these nice views from the sky, and I look forward to take hard action and be happy to finish my CPL and ATPL in a few years. :) I am currently studying PPL and I am flying around my country. I am about to fly my first navigation routes soon, and I need this computer to do calculations to my flight plan, and of course to use the computer for ATPL exams. Well from as it looks like now. I have two choices:

-The CRP-5 which cost almost 130 dollars. (and it is made of plastic).
-And the E6B COLOR which only costs about 55 dollars (and it's made of aluminum).

My question is, what is the big difference between these two. I would really like to take the E6B. The price is much better, plus it is made of aluminum which gives it a longer lifetime. Can I pass EASA ATPL exams and fly in Europe by using the E6B? I see no reason at all buying the CRP-5 it is so expensive and only made of plastic. I heard some rumors that E6B is only for FAA students, and some problems with the units.

I hope you can help me out guys.

Is there anyone here how passed ATPL (EASA) and flight in europe without any problem, by using the E6B?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, the E6B doesn't do compressibility. Our recommendation is to use the Jeppesen CR-3 if you can get one off ebay (they don't make them any more) or the ATR equivalent if you want brand new.

I talked to a few instructors today at my school and they all said that I sadly need the CRP-5 to pass ATPL exams, it's so expensive, but I have to deal with it.

The same price but a better product is the AFE ARC-2 if you want to go the slide computer route. There is some sort of myth that the CRP-5 is used to write the questions with. Not true any more.

Nor was it ever an issue even when (if?) questions were written with the CRP-5 as the model computer. I did my UK ATPL exams with a Jepp CR5, the smallest and arguably least accurate of the CR range, and still got my answers within the median of my CRP-5 classmate's answers. What's more, all of us using the CR types had a smaller spread of answers, compared to the CRP-5s.

Jepp CRs (and equivalents from APR Industries) are rather cheaper than the CRP-5 too.

Damned if I know why anyone would use a CRP-5 compared to a Jepp CR.

Yes CRP is Expensive, but honestly, I found it very easy to use. I still have it. Just in case I will have some flight planning to do again with an SEP :D .

But maybe you can find a used one on Ebay or so. In my opinion worth the money. And although it is plastic, it is actually very lasting. Found one for about 18 Pounds on Ebay. Costs about the same extra to send it to your country.

There's another good one from IWA. EASA permitted.

I used an Aviat 617, which is superb, but also several times the price of CRP-5.

Frankly, just bite the bullet and buy a CRP-5W, it's a superb bit of kit, that genuinely will help. Roughly speaking, it costs about the same as 15 minutes of CPL level flying training.
