G1000 Management

Hello.

I'm renewing a lapsed IR (had to redo 5 exams).

My first IR was on the Seneca. Now on a DA42.

Keep making "switch pigs". Does anyone have a method of managing the G1000 in terms of Comms/Nav/Brg1/Brg2/CDI1/CDI2/DME/ADF?

I do have a Com & Nav Plan made up for each route.

NB Not doing RNAV just yet: just the old style IR. Will deal with that later (before Aug 2020 of course).

there is a useful IPAD app for around 15 pounds you can buy which simulates the G1000. You can practice nav setups and even RNAV and GPS approaches. Very useful, I used it during my training.

Try to find GARMIN G 1000 Trainer sim for Windows PCs.

Im currently coming to the end of my MEIR on the DA42 and I found the Simionic G1000 app for the ipad/tablet really useful, You can practice everything you just mentioned and honestly once you have the hang of the G1000 it makes the IR so much easier. Ive previously flown the Duchess and can vouch that the DA42 is amazing as is the G1000.

I recently did my FAA IR in a GNS430 equipped C172, having done most of my instrument flying historically with steam driven equipment in the UK. It became really apparent really quickly the need to be utterly on top of the avionics in terms of modes, thinking ahead, tricks, and so-on.

My solution was to download the G600 trainer to my laptop and pre-run every planned flight on that, with lots of mucking about with modes and options to get a good idea of what I could do. It's time consuming, but necessary. I found that I did need to manage this for myself, as instrument instructors do not generally seem to have much idea about aiding students in guided learning of these systems (that surely must change going forwards).

I think I'd recommend exactly the same approach with any advanced avionics system now. Just doing the old fashioned stuff for the moment really does not work - you need to be fully on top of the kit from the start. For example, knowing how to load up the GPS visualisation of a planned VOR approach to aid your SA, it is just how you have to use it.

I did all of my training on Garmin equipped aircraft. What worked for me was that least was better. For example in a holding, I would only keep the related CDI on it and its bearing pointer to assess the progress in the hold. Same thing on a DME arc.
If I had to fly outbound on a radial, at some point I would remove the said CDI and keep flying on its bearing pointer and set up the second CDI to intercept the next radial from another station.

For comms I only used Comms 1. I would use Comms 2 only to monitor 121,5 and listen to the ATIS.

I suggest you get a training software to practice. It is a fully-fledged FMS, and while for your typical IR you will use only a little part of it, with practice your management of CDI's, bearing pointers, ADF and DME indications will quickly improve. And of course the PBN portion will be more mangeable.

Not so fresh when I look on the database but still reliable to learn the functions and for most of the approaches ;)
One big plus, it's free. To run it, look in the menu and search for the icon with 2 gears, it should run both PFD and MFD together, if you run it manually, you won't be able to use the MFD (for me the most important thing on the G1000)
