EASA ATPL self study

Hi all,

I m looking at self studying the ATPL-A (been flying helo in the UK for many years now). As far as the ground school is concerned, has anyone here self studied (PadPilot or else) and then completed the 16 hours consolidation ? Would the providers (BGS, CATS, etc) be ok with that, or do they expect their students to complete their “in-house” course before the consolidation ?

Thanks for your input.

As far as I know, you need to be signed up to an ATO and attend their brush-up course preceding the examinations.

Only recently, I heard of a student who sat all 14 exams, passed all first time but to then be flagged up in a CAA audit that showed he hadn't attended any brush-up courses, which resulted in all exams being wiped.

Thanks for your reply Alexdavies. I do understand and agree with you that one needs to be signed up to an ATO. My question was more in the sense of: is it, from a commercial stand point, possible to sign up for the 2 days brush up course at an ATO without having used their in-house study material ?

In other words, can one purchase her/his favorite study material -at ATO X, or from a friend- and then complete the mock exams and the brush up course at ATO Y ?

cheers

That depends on the school - we would simply treat that as private tuition. We often have people from other schools and many self-certifiers. What you suggest is possible, but unless you are able to self-certify by having an ATP and PIC hours on multi-crew aircraft, you will need an ATO sign off anyway, which means using their study material and consolidation anyway. Some schools require you to do all the progress tests before you turn up for consolidation, we don't require that - in fact we recommend that the classroom stuff is done earlier rather than later, i.e. definitely not at the last minute. You mentioned 16 hours.... ?

The ATPL will not be valid anymore?

Also so what do you guy think about the book from aviationexams I failed POF and have only one shot left to finish the exams and want to put all the chance on my side concerning the test and was maybe looking to buy the book but don’t know if itsthat useful
