Maths and Physics prep.
Hello all,
Apologies as this has been done a few times generically before, i've saved up enough to jump into the modular route and have decided to brush up on my Maths and Physics, its been 9 years since my GCSE's and i've not used them much. I came across a website 'flyinsite' (cant post links yet) offering a book for aviation related maths & physics. Has anyone here used this and can recommend or should i just stick to what everyone else says and use Bitesize? Need to get cracking as i'm quite rusty... Cheers, Nord |
Websites like Khan Academy and Don't Memorise are nice. You can find several channels on YouTube and if you do a search with Google you will also find several websites
Essential Maths and Physics Bundle by OATMedia might also be worth the small investment. |
That essential maths and physics bundle looks perfect especially at the reasonable price, have you used it or know anyone who has?

You can download some for free here: http://www.captonline.com/samplenotes.pdf

Compass test?
|
Padpilot.eu Maths and Physics for Pilots - available Free of Charge through the I-Store - follow the link on their web site.
Mental Maths for Pilots - Can't remember the author but The Big River site had it last time I checked. Another tip - start mentally adding stuff up as you walk around the supermarket, or driving at x speed, whats my ETA (and RTA further along) etc... |

@nord121, I am not aware of many psychometric tests that include physics - only Mollymawk and a few others - but generally, the maths test is very basic arithmetic, very basic geometry, and SOHCAHTOA style of trigonometry. Focus more on maths tricks and shortcut and how to do it on paper, because in most of the cases you will not be allowed to use a calculator. |
Right - they never work anyway :)

Hello all,
I was indeed talking about the psychometric tests. Oh right okay well i suppose it cant be bad to learn a little to help me along the way, Pacos notes certainly compress it into a nice format for learning a section a night or something like that. Banana Joe i will scrub up on subjects like that ive been doing long division and multiplication on paper etc to get myself back into the swing of things. SOHCAHTOA is all included in Pacos notes so thats handy. Duchess thank you for the suggestions ill look into all of them, especially as they are freebies, i dont understand how CAE can try and charge you 38 pounds for 6 months when there is so much free stuff around, i think ill stay away from them. Nord. |
Th mention of firkins in those notes is a joke BTW :) You might get a laugh if you used in in an interview...

The DMS button is the golden button for GNav.

COMPASS does indeed include a separate physics test,I did two in May. Basic maths, more like Speed, distance time questions, bearings and not so much trig
Thank you, what did you do in preparation. If anything? |
Make sure you are adept at transposing formulae.
I have spent hours teaching individuals who were unable to do this because it was not possible to hold up a lecture just because some students couldn't do it. |
good preparation suggestions, thank you. i will be doing my compass test next month. maths is ok, but havent had any physics since secondary school 15 years ago. any reference for an estimated preparation time in this case?

Newtons laws of motion, especially the second.

Does anyone know a good app to practice mental maths?

How hard is the maths and physics in the ground school work? I got A's and GCSE, but really struggled with Physics at A level?
