ICAO CPL with Type Rating to EASA License conversion
 

Hi all,

I've been researching and would like to know if anyone has experience converting an ICAO CPL with a type a rating into an EASA license (either frozen or full ATPL) and what would it take to do it?

I got an CPL from an ICAO member state and posses an A320 SIC type rating on that license. Currently +1500hrs TT and +500hrs A320.

From what I understand, I still have to take the 14 exams (however, not required to attend the week long class anymore, right?) but after that is there any advantage of having the TR and all the time in type (when it comes to converting the CPL, IR, TR, etc? maybe no MCC required anymore or could I apply for a non-frozen ATPL?)

Bumping this old thread because I'm interested in the same thing.

I'm rated in ATR with +500h in type and +1500h total time, currently flying for an airline in a ICAO country with a CPL license. Here it's not possible to get the local ATPL until I got my upgrade to left hand seat, that is several years away, thus I would like to convert my high-experience CPL license into the EASA ATPL.

Basically I want to know which one of the following is the way to proceed:
* Take the 14 ATPL exams plus a sim check of my type (ATR).
* Take an ATPL theory course, the 14 exams, convert the CPL+IR+ME, and then add the TR by doing a sim check.

In addition, it might be possible for me to take the local ATP theory exam. Do you think it changes anything considering that there it means nothing, unlike the frozen-ATP in EASA countries, that exam here it's just one of the many requirements for the final ATP license.

If you had had ICAO ATPL (A), you wouldn't have enrolled ground school.

Pilots holding ICAO CPL (A) should take ground school in one of the EASA countries.

It doesn't change even if you have +1500 hours.

There are lots of flight schools providing distance learning in Europe.

You can check out for their prices.

If you have a certain minimum hours as PIC on a multi-crew aircraft.

Besides, I've spoken with a few flight schools and read the regs and it seems I have to take the long (and expensive) way of converting the CPL, IR, ME with little or no credit from my experience. EASA doesn't make things easy :(.

Does anyone know any ATPL distance-learning course flexible with the 10% ground school required? All I've found are weeks of brush-up classroom time, but I cannot take more than 3-4 days at a time each month in Europe.

Did you do your Atpl there I am interested. I have 2000hrs total 1000 in the A320 and 800 in the bae js41. I need to know after you finished your 14 exams, you can go and do a checkride in the plane you have in your icao license, or you need to do some flying hours or both?

​​​​​​Pass the exams, take the test in a SIM for whatever type you have in your ICAO licence. You'll get an ATPL and if you've got more than 500 hours on type, you'll get the type rating too.

But I have to fly some hours to go to the sim or can I go direct to the sim?

You can just book a SIM

What if instead of an ATPL I have a CPL with a type rating on it? I might even get the foreign ATPL theory exam passed, but unfortunately not the full license because in my country they only provide it when you are assigned a Captain position.

Hi I also have a CPL with type rating. What I understand you can have the easa atpl with a CPL but you have to enroll in an ATO do first do the 14 exams.
