What can I get for 33K?
Hi PPRuNers,
Newbie here. I have 33k sitting in the bank and want to go modular for CPL/IR and fATPL. How far will 33k GBP get me? Any ideas on which schools etc would be helpfull. I have about 20 hours flying experience. Shlong. |
I know a guy who got a CPL/IR FIC at the Leeds Flying School for about £20,000
|
Also check out Stapleford Flying Club and Multiflight, both of which have 'ab-initio' modular courses for less than 30k,

Schlong, take these as rough figures assuming modular route:
PPL £7000 Night £500 IMC £2000 Hour Building £4000 CPL £5500 IR £14000 MCC £2000 Not far from the £33k figure sat in your bank. MB:) |
That should go a good way to a frozen ATPL from modular courses. Any more you require banks should be happy to loan you - it was the full course costs they were starting to balk at!
I suggest you get a magazine such as Flight International, and look at the adverts. Alternatively the full list of approved Flying Training Organisations is on the CAA website. This is a huge amount of money you will spend, so it is worth calling many of them, and visiting all you like the sound of. You will find where you feel happy and comfortable, who you feel will support you through this arduous course. you can also check out the airport and the local area. Aviation facilities at your base airport can make a difference, and you must be happy to spend probably 12-18 months in the area if you do the course with one FTO. Also check out the options available, especially the choice between attendance and distance-learning courses for groundschool. Don't be afraid to do one course at one FTO then move onto another for the next - you may wish to do groundschool with an FTO that does not provide flying training. At the risk of falling foul of advertising rules of PPRuNe, checking the price list for Bournemouth Commercial Flight Training (my employer) it works out starting from zero hours around £26 000 plus some for hour building (which you might choose to do abroad - we cannot compete with US prices!) and an MCC (we don't run courses, but can put you in touch with those that do in Bournemouth). The prices are on the website, some examples being: £9215 plus test fee (but including VAT) for an IR, £4510 for a CPL. If you want any more information, general or specific to BCFT feel free to email me at the address in my profile. However you go about your training, I wish you the best of luck! ---------------------- My apologies to the moderator if this is considered advertising. I have tried simply to give unbiased information, then the specifics requested by Mr Shlong wrt our school. |
P.S. Monkeyboy - you forgot £2 500 - 5 000 (depending on type of course) for the ATPL groundschool!
|
Also, a top tip for planning expenses and time allowed.
Add at least 20% to the final cost. Add at least 30-50% to the time allowed for. After 17 years in the industry.... and converting one ATPL to another, you won't go wrong with those additions. Now, if every thing goes smoothly, you are laughing. If it doesn't, you've made allowances for it already. |
a TVR Tuscan....(Broom broom)

or how about 110000 bars of Dairy Milk Chocolate.... (YUM YUM)

A parking spot in Kowloon?
cough cough |
You could also look overseas for a cheaper course, and then factor in conversion training to fly back home.
Just a thought. |
Nano
Unfortunately under JAA the conversion tends to be almost as arduous as the whole licence. Redsnail may be able to offer more advice about the flying, but I do know you would need all 14 JAA exams. |
A terraced house with 3 decent sized bedrooms in S****horpe!

You all seem to have forgot about living expenses and accomodation while training. These figures are pretty accurate for modular, regardless of what the school marketing depts tell you!
PPL 5,000 IMC, Night, Multi, 100hrs building, accomodation, exps etc 12,000 ATPL groundschool, accomodation, exps etc 10,000 CPL 5,000 IR 12,000 MCC 3,000 £47K all in. These figures are realistic but based on full time study. You could do it cheaper by cutting out the accomodation costs and choosing a school close to home. I think people take for granted the full time ATPL groundschool, and how much it really costs. Dont forget while you're doing all this, you'll spend money on insurance renewals, car tax, servicing, normal bills etc. This game aint cheap!!! |
Thumbs Up!
Thanks alot for the advice PPRuNers. Very much appreciated. Such a wealth of knowledge out there.
Thanks again. Shlong. |
