Completeing The I/R by June 2002
I am interested to hear if any of you struggling to complete the non approved I/R are having any difficulty. Is there a shortage of
training aircraft and instructor time at your I/R school ? Are the CAA making examiners available at weekends etc. in respect of the very poor training-testing weather we have seen during the last few weeks. My motive is to gauge the size of the potential problem to see if seeking an extension to the end of June cut-off is appropriate. |
As a matter of interest why are you being specific about this June 2002 deadline?
This deadline only applies to the 12 hour reduction for a CAA licence issue. Generally people who take the exam have a CPL issued so you are given a 5 hour reduction, so that leaves a difference 7 hours (I suppose in real money that's 1,500 pounds). I know of a few people who have done it on minimum hours, but also I know a lot of people who after re-takes have got their IR on considerably more than the minimum JAA hours. So are you asking the question on the basis on of saving 7 hours of valuable IR training - which could further improve your flying? |
The non-approved deadline does not just mean a 7 hour reduction in hours. Non-approved training is training as required, so theoretically you could only do a couple of hours and then take the flight test (although that would not be advisable). The CAA have said that anyone who is ready for the test but cannot get an initial slot before 30 June may be granted a small extension. However, I do not believe that they will provide an extension to anyone else as this deadline has been set for a long time.

Yes I am , trg held up by windy weather work , etc . Doing course now and almost ready but i need to finish by june or my caa written exam credits are lost . Any extension would ease the pressure . Have bcpl ,hopefully to get fATPL/cpl (A)(R) IR issued.
Any help welcome ps please donot tell me i should have started last year!!!:( |
Unfortunatley the CAA did not make any extensions on the BCPL deadline last year and I am sure they will not do anything this year. However, I am not sure that the deadline will necessarily cause anyone to lose their exam credits.

Thanks LFS for putting me right.... someone has pointed out to me that the non-approved route is still on going - I thought it had died last year, hence the confusion.
Vetflyer, I went from BCPL to JAR CPL doing the complex single flight test. I then locked in my fATPL exams on a JAR licence. I now have 36 months from my last CAA exam to get a JAA IR on an approved JAA course. As I'm doing the ultra slow cheapo route I'm currently half way through my IR on a non complex single - I do the test and my ATPL's are frozen - I've got another 18 months time to go to complete it this way. I have a letter from the CAA clarifying the above is legitamate. If you are running out of time - suggest you do the BCPL to JAR CPL test and get a JAR CPL issued before the end of June then you have 36 months from your last exam. That might help with more time. Why should anyone be struggling to complete a non-approved IR before the 30th June deadline?
If I remember correctly, the CAA first told us this was going to happen in 1997 and again in January 1999 through the AICs. I know it all boils down to time and money but who in their right mind is going to leave something like this to virtually the last minute? - and even more importantly when faced with the prospect of coughing up another 20 grand for the privilege of doing the JAR IR modular course -that alone would scare me into action! The first thing my instructors told me was to PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! It seems to me that anyone who finds themselves in this predicament has a total lack of awareness of the real world - in my opinion it would be a cheek to expect the CAA to bend over backwards to help you if you haven't been arsed to help yourself in the first place! I think your wrong The CAA did publish this in an AIC 5 years ago BUT, Did they put ad's on the TV and Radio? Did they come round to our houses in person to remind us? Did they slip this information into the Coronation Street plot? Did they hire a sky writer to spread this deadline above each Air Fair. NO they did not. WHY NOT? God this is SO unfair, I'm going to stamp my feet then write to my MP AND the PM and then even the Queen and I'll CC President Bush and demand they extend the deadline. How did they expect us to know... I mean how... by actually READING an AIC???? |

Whereas I agree that notifying via AIC's does not cut the mustard, I have to tell you that if you make noises about it, you'll just be another one in a long line of people who have got no where. My advice is to ask by all means, but before you start mounting any broadside's against the Belgrano, ask yourself how likely you are to get anywhere. Take a back step and look at the bigger picture, and you'll start to understand why. I know it's not fair, but that's the way it is. S |

I understand your concern Martin. I'm told that BFC. have six students/instructor for IR. training. This is surely going to drag it all out. I understand that you have been inundated with applicants, but is is fair to accept them all?:rolleyes:

NA students
My Head of Training tells me we are on schedule to complete
our NA students on time. The problem with non-approved students is we can never predict the amount of training required as the intake standard is so variable. We have hired additional instructors so I am happy with our student/inst ratios My worry was there would not be sufficent test available . The CAA has been most helpful , now we need the same co-operation from the met man! |
