Do I need a M1 visa to get license in the US?

Do I need a student visa to do my pilot license in the US?
Some schools say yes, some say no, I am confused.
What does the M1 gives me and why do I need it?

Please give your answer only if you confident and really know what you saying since I am confused enough already!
