JOC
It seems that some companies (such as Wizzair) now requires cadets to have completed Jet Orientation Course (JOC) and more and more people actually pay for this kind of courses even on their own initiative.
I really don't understand the point of this, since I think a good 200-hour pilot (albeit with a fresh CPL licence) is able to complete a type rating (combined with shortened MCC) without any previous jet experience. There is really no need for spending an additional 20 hours in a FNPT2 sim of aircraft, which might be miles different than the aircraft you will fly as your first job. Or is there? Any thoughts on this? |
In theory learning the foibles of flying a swept wing prior to the Type Rating Course should mean you have more capacity to learn the specifics of the aircraft, less repetition of exercises and so less chance of extra training being required.
Even if you are paying for the course airlines can and do pull the plug if much extra training is required, starting the course doesn't guarantee getting the type on your licence. In practice I have seen candidates with no JOC get through and conversely some who have completed a JOC fall by the wayside. |
Wizzair are just expecting cadets to have a JOC, they also expect those of us with turboprop ratings to have a JOC to apply.

JOC is a load of rubbish if you ask me. Why airlines require them, I will never understand.

I'd suggest NO one goes and get a JOC just with the slight hope of getting in with Wizz Air.
Just been rejected by Wizz Air. Applied for NON TR 2800TT 2600 Hrs Multi Crew Turbo Prop MCC & JOC FAA A320 TR FATPL FAA ATP What the hell do you need to get an interview with these guys...... |
If you need a cheap JOC contact Airliner 1.

B737900er, what is the JOC like at Airliner 1, don't know much about them?
Would you recommend them!? |
Air Baltic offers also nice JOC. Around 2200 EU for 10 hours total in FFS.
I have not done it, but I spoke with guys who did it there. 5hours PM 5 hours PF. |
Airliner 1 do a JOC for £1000 per student or £1200 including accommodation (limited time only)
Its for 5 days, 20 hours (10 hours per student) but UNLIMITED use of the sim. So you can actually get more hours in if you want to cover certain things. So far two courses have been concluded and the students were happy. They have been offered to come back and use the sim when they please for interview prep. Its still early days for these guys but being the only simulator in the north, the market is theirs. :ok: |
