IR Revalidation

Hi
Time has come for a revalidation of my MEP/IR.
I did a renewal last year in a MEP at a ATO at great cost and so it is just a revalidation this time around.
2 questions:

Can I do the whole MEP/IR in an sim and secondly does anyone know of a cheap or reasonable place that has the facility to do this without going through the very expensive ATO organisations.

Thanks :)

vasi9,

If you revalidate your IR before its date of expiry, and if you did your renewal in an aircraft last year (which you would have done if it was a renewal), you can revalidate your IR this year in an FNPT2.

You cannot revalidate your MEP in an FNPT2 - it has to be done in the aircraft.

But there is no point in revalidating your MEP unless you plan to fly an MEP aircraft in the next year. The airlines do not need it to be current, and not having a current MEP does not affect your ATPL ground credits.

So I suggest that you revalidate your IR in an FNPT2 (although this will have to be done at an ATO), and leave your MEP renewal until next year when you will have to revalidate/renew your IR in an aircraft anyway.

To reinforce what Linda has written, you can only revalidate the IR in the sim if your current IR is still in date. If it has gone past its expiry date then you will have to do it in the aircraft regardless of how you did it last year.

Most modular training providers charge a similar cost for the use of the sim so you just need to call around the schools most convenient to your location. If you’ve not done any instrument flying in the last 12 months you might want to also consider a sim session with an instructor to blow out the cobwebs and refresh procedures.

The choice of school may well come down to how long you have until your current rating expires and the availability of IR instructor, sim and examiner.

Thanks Linda and Magicmic for your information. That clarifies the regulation very clearly.
Now to find a place to revalidate!
