Type Rating abroad on a FAA ATP
 

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a form that I can download or complete online to request permission from the FAA to do a type rating in South Africa?
I had a look on the FAA website and couldn't find the right one, despite trying different search criteria. I assume that many FAA certificate holders do ratings in other countries and that there must be a reasonably straightforward process to do this.
Any help, greatly appreciated.

The training school should be the ones who are helping you with the admin side. I know that somewhere like DXB are able to complete all paperwork, so I not sure why your school cannot do it, they must be authorised by the FAA therefore, they know best what to do.

Or just call the FAA and explain, its quicker and easier.

The form for everything FAA rating-related is the 8710-1.

I'm not clear if what you're asking to do is to complete a practical for a ZA ATPL and then apply for a FAA ATP type rating based upon that, or if you're trying to do a FAA Part 135 practical with a FAA DPE who just happens to be in ZA.

If it's the latter, the DPE ought to know how to do it. If it's the former, it's the 8710-1, but you might have trouble getting the FAA to buy off on it.

Trying to do much outside of a normal lane with FAA Airmen Certification is seldom easy, no matter how simple it may appear. I speak from experience.

Thanks for the advice, I simply want to do an aircraft type-rating with simuflight in Joburg. I thought I would have to get an SA validation or convert the licence but they have advised that if the FAA give a letter of permission to train there, then I don't need to do anything and can simply do the rating using my FAA ATP which would be an infinitely simpler process. Hopefully the 8710 form you refer to might cover. Cheers Fellas

Make sure you get TSA approval before you start simulator training.
