FAA to JAA...my experiences (at Bonus Aviation)(merged)
If anyone wants a short run down on my conversion from FAA to JAA, here it is.
My background information is: FAA CFI & MEI; 1200 hours; airline experience
Hope that helps some people see the structure of the process. Distance learning as a method was not new to me, but you must be dedicated and disciplined. I probably spent 1 hour a day and a few hours on the weekends to go over the material and questions; and I have already had nearly all of it before, although I have been out of daily flying for nearly 10 years. Don't forget the light at the end of the tunnel while you study for the exams! |
Thanks for taking the time to write it up.
Usefull info for the ones to follow :ok: |
coming from the US I just shake my head at the whole need to book beacon slots |
Beacon slots are instrument approaches. In the UK, you usually book them ahead of time for flight training.

Having done some training at Bonus, I think I agree with your summary.

Bonus saved my bacon; faults, yes, but fewer than the two other FTOs I foolishly chose because they were 'cheaper'.
I never had any mechanical issues with them - it was a regular thing to be behind a Thielert special that had to RTB because of issues at runup, however. Interesting OP. |
Trolle, great report! Very much appreciated! I can see myself in your account - doing the FAA to JAA conversion as well, also worked as a CFI in the States, out of regular flying for about ten years, studying for the conversion besides working a full time job, but fortunately the light at the end of the tunnel is coming closer!!!

Bonus Aviation
Has anyone got any recent experiences of this school?
The offer a great price for CPL/ME/IR Cheers |
My experiences are from spring 2011, so they are very recent.
The pricing was one aspect that led me to choose Bonus. Don't forget to add in their fuel surcharge fee, approach fees (also at Cranfield), and test fees. |

Thanks for writing this, very helpful!

Hi dear,
did You finally get an airliner job ? |
Thanks
I'm a furloughed pilot with 5000+ hours and varied experience and was playing around recently looking to find a flying job in Europe. It's been hard to find a concise explanation of all I'd have to go through to make myself even eligible to find work. All of that is way too much work and expense. Thanks for the writeup!
