PPL license issue during ATPL integrated course (CTC)

Hi all,

I'm due to start my ATPL training next month with CTC on the integrated Wings course. I currently hold 44 hours towards a PPL which I have completely (staggered) over many years, but have only completed and passed the Air Law exam.

Now, ideally, I would like to be able to take my parents out on a flight if/when they visit me in New Zealand. (Before I hold the CPL). By the time I'm out there I will have completeled my theoretical part and passed all the ATPL groundschool exams. So my question is, to obtain a PPL will it be a case of passing the skills test and paying for license issue, or will I have to complete the original PPL groundschool exams on top of my ATPL exams?

Thanks for your input!

Yes. Plus you have some extra hours (for a UK JAA) and you would need to check that a JAA licence would be valid for SFH in New Zealand.

Cheers

Thanks Whirls!

I was hoping that wasn't going to be the response, but then it's my own fault really!

Plus, depending on what you covered in your 44 hours, you'll need to make sure you've completed a qualifying cross country of IIRC 150nm with 2 full stop landings at other aerodromes, plus have enough solo, dual, stall awareness etc. and an instructor to recommend you for a skills test (you can't just book one like a driving test).

Depends on your finances but I would expect that it's not worth the cost, on top of all your CTC bills.

Thanks for the info/advice. I've completed my qualifier, and have enough P1 time with Cabair at Elstree. I was told not to fly any more until I complete my groundschool exams, but that was before I was accepted into CTC.

Thanks to both of you for your input.

nothing stopping you going for a flight with an instructor in the front and you flying and them in the back.

If I go anywhere and want to take folk up thats how I do it because it usually costs to much for a check ride. 9 times out of ten I sit in the back and let one of them fly it which is exactly what would happen if I took them up myself.

I am a current FI BTW.

My circumstances are identical to yours pipersam and wondered about this myself. I asked this question just yesterday on the CTC wings cadet thread and got the following good response from greenfreddie.

It is possible to sort out an NZPPL - you don't get one as part of the course if you follow the integrated JAR syllabus, though all of the syllabus items (with the exception of low flying) are covered. There is an aeroclub on the airfield who, worst case, can do it, however as CTC NZ are quiet at the moment there is probably enough capacity for them to do it for you in house. The delaying factor is getting the relevent fit and proper person documentation through the NZCAA and subsequent receipt of the license paperwork, which could take a month to turn up, which might be worth bearing in mind if you are planning on particular visit dates.
Cheers to greenfreddie and to all for the additional info!

To all those who are considering an integrated CPL course make sure you get 100 hrs genuine P1 time as part of the course. This may or may not require taking out a PPL. While it may not be important for your home licence it will be if you ever need to get a foreign one based on your JAA one.
