First MPA Type Rating & ME/IR Currency

I’m just looking for some clarification on the requirement for a current ME/IR to undergo training for an initial MPA TR.

Lasors 2010 states:

Pre-requisite conditions for training

hold a current and valid multi-engine Instrument
Rating (Aeroplanes). This requirement applies to a
first MPA type rating. For subsequent type ratings
the Instrument Rating may be renewed if necessary
during the type rating course and skill test. A UK
QSP(A) who has held a Green Instrument Rating
within the preceding 5 years is deemed to hold a
‘current and valid’ Instrument Rating.

Does this in practise mean:

Option A) I only need a current ME/IR to commence TR training however it can expire before course completion.

Option B) The ME/IR has to be current up to the point of the TR skills test and then that in effect renews the IR.

Option C) The ME/IR needs to be current at the point of application for the TR to be endorsed on my licence by the CAA.

Option D) Other.

Thank you in advance for your response. Use of the search function didn’t yield any answers.

Why do people insist on manufacturing problems that do not, in reality, exist? A valid MEIR is a pre-requisite for training - i.e. it is required before training is commenced. Why is there any doubt as to what that means?

I am well aware that a current ME/IR is required to commence training. That is very clear from the section quoted from Lasors 2010. I would however like some insight, clarification and constructive comment on the options I have regarding once the training course has started.:ok:

eg. option ( ) is correct because......

Well without putting one of your numbers on it, Billiebob quite clearly said no (1) was correct.

Not only did he quite clearly say that, he quite correctly said it too!

Ok, maybe I should rephrase the question. From what I have posted it is very clear I need a current ME/IR to start a type rating training course. I am not traying to make any issue about this. It is a pre requisite in all of the given options above. What I am more interested to know is are there any issues about when the ME/IR expires which complicate things could further down the line during or after training.

I am merely looking for conformation that I haven’t missed an obscure regulation somewhere in Lasors that will end up biting me in the arse when I rock up to the skills test/CAA centre. I have seen and heard about this happening to many people, retaking tests purley because of a regualtion oversight and I am merly trying to avoid this.

Only way to make sure if you are concerned is stick to the 'traditional route,' least you know where you stand with the the CPL/IR.

Ok, I hear you better now - and of course I mean (A) and not (1) was correct from your original post. What you may have missed a bit is that it's a pre-requisite to be valid at the START (only) for the FIRST MPA type only. If you go on to obtain more, then you don't need the ME/IR to be valid at the start of the 2nd/3rd/4th.... type ratings!

Hope that clears it up.

VJW thats changed in the last couple of years apparently you do now need a valid IR of some form be it MPA or SPA before starting your 2nd 3rd etc.

Its been a right pain in the arse (and expensive) for quite a few mates after being made redundant and getting a new job on a new type after there old MPA/IR had run out.

mad_jock 14th Feb 2011 18:55

Nope I can't, but 3 different TRTO's won't let them start a TR without one.
