GAPAN - The Guild of Air Pilots & Air Navigators

Prendi 17th Jan 2011 18:09

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction please. I really want to learn to fly (rotary), so I guessed this was the right place to start.

I have a job that I love right now, but I've been thinking about going for my professional rotary license for a few years now and changing career. My wife is getting bored of me talking about it and told me to do something about it. Fair enough!

So I was wondering if there are any kind of grant or scholarships and failing that any kind of loan companies that pilots use?

This scholarship is for people wanting to upgrade to an instructor right? Or am I just misreading?

Many thanks in advance!

Whirlygig 17th Jan 2011 19:19

Yes, the rotary GAPAN scholarship is for the Instructor Rating - you'll need a CPL(H) first if you want earn from instructing.

The Dennis Kenyon PPL scholarship has lost sponsorship so may not happen (and you might be too old).

Other than that, I can't think of any other rotary schoilarships. There are no specific loans unless you can re-mortgage a house but be aware that there is no work at the moment for low-houred helicopter pilots.

Have a read through Rotorheads threads on becoming a helicopter pilot.

Cheers

Thanks so much for the info Whirls. Not going to give up at the first hurdle yet though. I'll tick off every possibility first.

Thanks again, Prendi

This is limited to people living in the UK right?

Great stuff, I'll have this. Thanks for the post :ok:

Can anyone recommend a decent flight school/training centre to nominate for overseas applicants? I see the scholarship doesn't cover accommodation etc.

Crikey , in this overly PC nanny state where you can sue at the slightest mention of age discrimination 28 is deemed TOO OLD for sponsorship

Im definitely knackered then !

On the plus side im applying for the FI(R) now the savings/equity/Kids inheritance/gold fillings have gone on the CPL/MEIR , great post !

The application forms do not specifically tell us what address to send the completed forms to. I am going to assume the address at the bottom of the first page is the correct one? i.e. "The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators
9 Warwick Court, Gray’s Inn, London, WC1R 5DJ
"

Could someone confirm this please? :)

god!I have to compete with 399 wannabes! That would really be a tough game. btw thanks a lot owen for these information.

danjenkins 28th Mar 2011 10:27

cheers for the into Owen, got my PPL application in this year. Fingers (And every other limb) crossed!

Any one sat the testing before? I'm looking at basic maths (GCSE level) and Aerodynamics. I'm hoping we wont have to much in the way of flying side of it as its for some one with no flying experience?

Any guidance or revision pointers would be very much appreciated? Pending results of course

Dan

If you check the last year's scholarship winners you could see most of them had some kind of flying experience either gliding or cadets. So it would be a tougher deal for someone who has never been into cockpit before. The only other way would be to prove ourself competent and seriously ambitious as said in the application. speed, distance and time calculations, aerodynamics, basic knowledge about flying and navigation, geography etc would be beneficial. If you have a look into the cadet program threads you could see some testing methods and I guess it would be somewhat similar for these as well. I am a new applicant and these are just assumptions. However I would suggest a deep research into flying related topics because at the end of the day it is all about "who is better than the best"

"hese scholarships can take a candidate with little or no experience, to completion of their flying licence during the course of the summer, alternatively they can finish training of someone who is already partially trained"

I do understand where you are coming from but I hope its not the case, not so much for me but other lads who wish to start there PPL and have never seen an aircraft before.

Back to relying on the trusty CV again!
