Met Atmospheric stability

Evening,

Does anyone out there have any hint / tips or wisdom they could pass on regarding atmospheric stability? inparticularly the relationship between ELR, DALR & SALR. is there any general rule that can be applied & easily remembered? short of rote learning the discertion (ELR > DALR unstable always etc etc)

Cheers
