Pilot Job in Euro the American way

It seems to me that the way of becoming an airline pilot in Europe is far different than in North America (US/Canada). In North America, typically one goes to flight school (privately) and they come out fresh with 200hrs, then they scrape the bottom of the barrel, so to speak, and work the ramps then work their way up through small, commuter airlines, or they instruct, and eventually they hit the big leagues. Is this possible in Europe? I don't see too much mention of these small, commuter airlines, "bush" airlines. Do they exist at all, or are most pilot jobs in Europe scored through the cadet style training.

Thanks
