Stage 2 Feedback

Hi all, just completed my stage 2 assesment, for those that want it, here's a breakdown of what to expect:
Arrival
You should aim to arrive 15 minutes minimum before your assesment time. I got there an hour before to grab a coffee and relax (there is free coffe, tea and water throughout the day). After waiting in the welcome room, you will be called as a group upstairs to another assesment lounge. Here, there is a tea and coffe machine, as well as a water dispenser. Make use of it, prepare yourself. Around this time, a representative of CAE will do a role call, ask for photo ID, and bring you through to the computer suite.

The ADAPT tests
All the testing software is on a laptop, in its own individual private booth. Once you have logged in with your license code, then, once you're briefed, you may begin. You can select any one of the tasks to do in whichever order you like, and take as many breaks as you like. The only time limit as such, is in the activities themselves, take as long as you need inbetween tasks to stretch your legs and grab a drink. As for the difficulty, the maths and physics tests are at a GCSE level, multiple choice questions, with most of the formulas given to you. Personally, I found the maths easier than the physics. The FAST test is hard, no two ways about it. So long as you improve on your second attempt, you'll be fine. However, if anything has scuppered my chances today, it will have been FAST. The coordination task (red dot) is very similar to the latestpilotjobs software, so I would definitely reccomend practising on there. The flight simulator task I found relatively easy, being a PPL holder, however if you're a gamer or just possess inate aircraft handling skills, you'll be fine.

Tips
  • Brush up on your mental maths, you'll need it
  • Be careful of just how sensitive the joystick is
  • Take as many breaks as you like
  • Enjoy it

I took the test on Monday. Thought it wasnt too tricky and wasnt designed to catch people out. ManFlex40 summarises well, but a couple of observations from me;
  • Symbiotics mock tests were by far the best demonstration of the Maths and Physics tests. Same style of questions, same genre, same time etc. I'd thoroughly recommend. I see no reason why i would not have gotten 100% on these unless i did something daft like not reading the question. All relevant formulae given, plus 2 or 3 questions theory questions.
  • Cognitive ability wasnt too extreme, didnt do the mock test for that but expect it would have been as above. In any event, my impression was that i got everything correct with plenty of time to spare.
  • FAST - first time was tricky, second time i thought was much simpler (its the same test twice!). Thought it went well, particularly the second attempt.
  • Ball - thought this was fine, though had what felt like it might have been an issue with the joystick flickering (like when you unplug and then replace a device on a pc). On a couple of occasions the ball darted off to the extreme edge of the circle but even with full twist (in the correct direction) took an eternity (~10 seconds) to move it back to the middle.
  • Fixed Wing - relatively simple, though the waypoints didnt appear to align with the headings given - hence do you follow the heading or aim at the waypoint? The airfield was large (there appeared to be 2 runways), so hard to tell at what point you were over it.
All of the above said, i got an email today offering me the ATPL rather than the MPL - which is good but also not what i was aiming at. I'd like feedback to confirm which of the above didnt go so well.

Hope that helps

Hey, got my assesment in a couple of weeks and the bit I'm least confident about is maths and physics (given that I'm older and it's been years since gcse's!) Which mock tests are you referring to as I think these would really help a lot. I've tried but failed to find anything on Google?

Symbiotics - google them, they are based in Worcester. If i recall there was a link in the documentation sent through by CAE.

There are plenty of tests available, including practice FAST tests - you can only do them once though so probably an idea to make a note of the type of questions you get.

I'm also a bit older maths wasn't really my strong point either, I'd say the advice to do the symbiotics tests is good it'll show you exactly the kind of questions you will have, but they cost ! tips: focus on being really fast with division/long division (simplifying fractions to help make the problems easier), multiplication/long multiplication, and using S=D/T (plus fuel burn) and working with converting mins to hours and vice versa , also there will be a usually fairly simple pythagoras question but can be worded confusingly so know this and your square numbers by heart, there will also be bearing questions, off the top of my head that is the foundation for maths... you will have 30 mins for this test and for me it always ends up being tight!

latest pilot jobs helps with speeding up your maths I didn't feel the physics was great myself, the ball test (reverse z axis) fight test (to some extent) and fast test are helpful, if your ok on sims the flight test should be fairly easy just pay attention, the CAE oxford prep software is very good and will give you nearly all the physics info you will need with the exception of gas laws. there's also another website called how2become which has many speed distance time and fuel burn questions some of these are definitely calculator so don't stress if you can't complete the harder ones within the time, but it's all good practice.

Now, you say you have two weeks, I'm not entirely sure how proficient you really are but I'd say that's a hell of a challenge to start doing this and pass the 'easyjet mpl' which is tougher than the atpl. if you fail on anyone one of the modules then I think that disqualifies you from the program and then white tail atpl is the only road and you will need to wait at least 3 months if any of the modules where below threshold for that also, I'm not entirely sure but I think you may be able to retest in 6 months for easyjet, so before you go consider all this I would delay if your not feeling reasonably confident or don't mind a wait!

good luck

I had an email back to say it would take 7-10 days to process the results.

Just got the email back, it was dissapointing news, I dropped down on the maths and physics, which I thought I did best in. Nevermind, back to the modular drawing board and hour building. Best of luck to those going forward.

I have been told less than 50% first-time passes for the ATPL, so I’m assuming MPL is even lower.

Guys, eJ crews in Italy have been stood down until April 3rd at the earliest. Crews will be paid basic only with state assistance for the rest. We lease approx 30% of the fleet, so we can retract by 1/3 as required. A few weeks ago I was worried for friends who had command courses cancelled - now I’m concerned about keeping my job in 6 months time.

I would be VERY careful about coughing up cash to put for training anytime soon...

Yeah we're facing existential threats to the industry right now. I've just been offered an interview date as well, but I can't head to Madrid because of the risk of flights being cancelled. I think it's still worth going through with the interview for the experience at least, but I'll postpone any start date until autumn or onwards so we know exactly where the market is at before making any payments.

Yes, I got a stage 3 invite shortly after I posted saying I expect they've put everything on hold I am going to take a pragmatic approach as well, go for the interview and then if I am successful make a decision later down the road. Seems pointless not going for the interview as won't loose anything at this stage apart from a days leave from work and cost of travel etc. I am in the fortunate position that I already have another career in the public sector with a very secure job but and, although a pilot career is what I aspire to, I feel more sorry for those that don't have alternative options or are committed to this being their only option.

I guess they are trying to keep the show running for MPLs because at the end, the pilots will be needed in 2 years from now. The issue is if the assessment will be still on, with so many flight restrictions and possible lock downs from several countries. You might go, and then out of the blue, you might need to put into quarantine when you go back home.

I think you will find that Spain is about to declare a state of emergency which will, in all likelihood, put a stop to such events.

The interviews are in small groups so they could still go ahead. However, obviously travelling for it is an issue so I've moved my interview to Gatwick. Still, biggest concerns should be the hiring situation (or lack thereof).

Health Warning - There will certainly be a reason the training organisations will try to keep the show running, but TBH I'm not sure it will have much to do with a shortage of MPL qualified pilots in two years time..

Hi !
I'm taking stage 2 in a few days, I've been training a lot for all the tests but I still have a question for the red ball test.
I understand that the z axis is inverted. OK
What about the up and down of the ball ? On the adapt test, If I push the joystick, is the ball going op or down ? (They are the two options on LPJ)
Thanks guys

My sister just finished the ATPLs on an MPL scheme, I'm strongly suggesting that they all think very hard about further payments just now. She's paid north of 50k for 14 ATPLs and is about to pay another 15k due to their top heavy payment schedules. If it was me, I wouldn't give them another penny as the school will surely have a shutdown due to the inevitible lockdown. The school will just trot out the business as usual line because they know all too well as to what is about to happen. This is a catastrophe. Those currently on a course should think VERY hard about making the next payment, anyone who is just about to start a course if derranged if they pay a penny.

If a white tail was to start an intergrated course at a large school today, i'd imagine the chance of them being in work by 2024 would be 50/50.

Should we all, cadets & experienced pilots on this forum, hold an Italian style, candlelit musical vigil in memory of this industry? We all just choke our vacuum cleaners to commemorate the jets that once filled our skies.

I miss life pre-apocalypse
