ATPL exams - in what country should I take?

Hello everyone,

Appologies for really dumb question but I'd better ask one and have no doubts in the future.
Currently I'm studying for PPL(A). In a few months I will pick up ATPL.
I hold Class 1 medical issued in Lithuania but I am attending a flight school in Poland.

Question: which CAA should I be taking ATPL exams - Lithuanian or Polish one? Am I free to choose one over other or are there any restrictions/limitations?
Also, assuming I pass all of them, I guess I'll be issued with that country's license, right?

Subsequent question: if I'm free to choose whichever CAA I want, which one would you recommend - Polish or Lithuanian one? Exams have always been significant stess for me (even at school, even for subjects I knew really well ) so I want an easier option with more known background, etc...

You'll pass all subjects and they'll give you the results report. Use wherever you want in Europe.
I've completed mine in Poland last month and now I'm hearing guys from Austrocontrol and I'd suggest you to pick Austro. Period Don't even ask me why.

Okay, so it seems there are no limitations of place versus Medical dependency for ATPL. That's good news.

Because now I'm preparing for PPL exams and it seems I'm limited to taking them only where I study - so in my case it's Poland.
The really bad thing about them is that they're translated with Google Translate or some other automated mechanism; most of them make little sense in understanding, so you need to learn them by heard (it's just like learning Chinese language or so). Some of them as so bad that I can't even understand neither the question itself, nor a single of given possible answers! I definitely don't want to have such case during my ATPL...

With all due respect, if you did your research well you would know the EQCB5 are the same set of question in Poland or Austrocontrol - so the PPL debacle wont show up in your ATPL. Yes I know the PPL is sh8t show. If you want to shoot your self in the foot go to Austrocontrol!

@hid3: I am doing all my exams in Poland and from what I heard the ATPL(A) questions are all the same from ECQB 5 in the whole Europe with exception for UK where they started with questions where you can fill in the answer (and from what I heard you also get a comment box where you can explain why that answer, or that is at least the answer I got in EASA Exams thread). As for strange questions or answers I only encountered them in question banks (AE and atpl questions) but they are so few that it will not make you fail the exam even if you draw them (not knowing if answer is corrected already or not).

As for PPL(A) exams I have no idea how they are written in English in Poland because I did them in Polish, but the questions are 100 % from boruh online and for free question bank except communication but the questions there were extremely easy. Generally the PPL(A) exams were so easy that I did not even do all 600+ in a subject like air law after I answered almost 100 % in half of the question bank. All 9 exams took like 2 hours at ULC. But the ATPL(A) exams is totally a different story since you get many unknown questions and the material is much much larger. I got currently 3 exams left (Planning, Meteorology and Airframes) that I plan to get done in my 4th session in July.

So my advice is do the exams at the place where its easiest for you to reach the place for examination, that way you can do 1 exam per day and do not need to rush with anything because of hotels, travel etc. the exams except for UK should look exactly the same.

Your medical must be in the same country as you do your Flying training, in the country where you license will be issued.
So you need Polish medical to get Polish license issued. Medical can transfer trough SOLI process. It's a real pain in the..... to do it.

Not quite correct. You can do your flying training in whatever easa country you like, regardless of your medical's or atpl theory country.
But for the pilot license issue, your medical file and the atpl results must be in the same aviation authority. So transfering them in one caa is the only solution which you can do it latest after your final skill test.

Well, for above it's quite vice-versa - boruh publishes the ULC questions (they're available on ULC site too).
To me it isn't very easy, since I have no experience in aviation, besides, I'm doing this in English. E.g. after 2-and-a-half weeks of practice I tried to do exam simulator yesterday and got only 50% for Principles of Flight

^^^ This is basically what I was interested in. Since my medical is Lithuanian, I will need to take ATPL exams at Lithuanian CAA too. Well, that's not bad - since ATPL is mainly self-study (except 2 weeks of brush up), I will be studying it at home (so no accomodation/travelling/hotels expenses) and the local CAA is only 8 km away from my home.

Not true either. The ATPL theory exams do not need to be written under the EASA authority where you hold the medical (which in turn issues the license). Nor do you need to do the practical training under the authority that holds the medical. You can even do the skills test outside of the territory of the member state that holds the medical, as long as the examiner is approved by the member state that holds your medical file

Sorry, I meant the atpl results and not 'to be written'.
And of course, the whole medical class 1 file should be moved and not the annual revalidation.

I did like this: atpl written in UK, skill test in Iceland and initial medical class 1 in Belgium (with annual revalidation in UK). Decided to have my license issued by Icelandic caa. Moved my written results and initial medical file to Iceland, then continued to revalidate my medical every year in Germany.

Wow, it's a real rocket science, at least for newbies! Most likely will take my ATPL exams locally, despite the fact that it costs a bit more; the price difference outweights expenses for commutes/hotels/etc

I've done it in Poland but no feedback about ppl
ATPL questions are EASA (of course) and it's cheap.
Bad thing is organization.I remember standing up to 3 hours to attend an exam even if at mid of the first week.
I've seen more than one person ******* it up because of poor personnel there. They can treat you as if you were in a bar during an exam and with poor english sometimes. Graphs quality is sometimes ridicolous (performance, m&b)
As I said, rude personnel, if everything goes smoothly you'll have no problem. If you have a problem with a pc or some printed documents, it can get a nightmare.
As far as i know now it's almost impossible to reserve sessions in advance.
But I'm talking about ATPL.

@anto125: I did both performance and mass&balance in June it was not that bad the graphs were totally doable on screen with mouse pointer just train a little in the question bank when testing yourself. Waiting to get everything printed well the Performance exam got too little time available so just do it on screen is my advice after passing the exam ( 93 %) and doing it on screen. As for waiting well normally it was a problem in April I waited some hours before I could get in to do the exam but did not see anyone who did not get in for his exam. In June there was no queue at all I went there and could immediately go for the exam, but the ULC personnel was helpful to tell me that in July I should come early because usually there is a lot of people who wish to pass their last exams (myself included) in order to not wait until September.

Other than that I was talking with them in Polish and everyone was very polite and helpful, I also never noticed anyone being rude when talking in English maybe you had bad luck to be there on a day when they had reserve personnel or something.

No i've met almost always the same personnel, but of course it was not all the time that bad.
3 session over 5 went flawless, but in flight planning for example, they printed me the wrong annex 4 times, and it was a long problem. That made me lose at least 20 mins.
I met a couple m&b sheets that were simply ridicolous in my exam but i still got 95%, it's all about luck regarding these things.
I would reccomend that but being aware of some issues can happen.

The problem in Poland is that ppl and atpl sessions are mixed, so in September (but it's not a rule) may happen that a lot of ppl student managed to fly in good weather (summer) and a lot of them are ready for the exams, as for me June, July and September sessions were the most crowded.

@r10bbr: Some people say new questions come in September others say they come in December. But what happens is that there is no session in August so who does not get done in July will not be done until September. And time is running the spots at the airlines are being filled all the time so everyone want to be done as fast as possible plus flight season is bad during the winter to finish the training.

As for me April was crowded, June was no queue at all and March was mixed.
