Leicester ATPL Exam Venue

Hi. The CAA info for the Leicester exam venue is fairly sketchy and just gives 'Learndirect' and the postcode (searching on google I don't think there is a Learndirect in Leicester). Any info on venue appreciated - in particular what is car parking like if I drive on the day and also is there any local accommodation anyone can recommend? Thanks.

Type postcode 'LE1 1QH' in Google Maps and it will show the pinpoint for 'Learndirect' if you zoom in and where you need to go. Not too sure about parking and accommodation.

It's about a 4 minute walk from the train station and there is a premier inn conveniently placed between the station and test centre.

There is pay and display car parking , about 30-40 spots located along colton street leading up to the exam centre ....there are no parking on the centre its self.

The previous poster says, there is a premiere inn just across the road at 1 St Georges Way , its just minutes from the train station as well

There are more cctv cameras in the exam room , than at the royal mint.

There's also an Ibis just round the corner if the Premier Inn is too expensive. Prices fluctuate wildly.

CTC use it a lot as the local exam centre for Coventry. I'm there next week for the final round.

Cheers guys. I have (and prefer) an old school calculator (think 1990's - obviously not programmable!). Are they absolutely strict on the Casio FX83/85/300 etc or will they allow an obviously basic calculator?

No, they checked my calculator when i was there ,only approved ones on the list allowed

I did most of my exams there last year, as others have said there is an excellent Premier Inn just across the road and that is where I stayed.

You just walk into the main Learndirect building, let the guy at the reception know you are there for CAA exams and he'll send you up to the exam centre.

For someone like myself without a car, it was miles easier than taking the exams at Gatwick (as I did with my first module). Shops/restaurants, station and exam centre all within a few minutes of the hotel.

As above, make sure you take only the calculators listed as approved. I would also take more than one in case one of them dies on you in the exam, as I don't think the invigilators are allowed to hand out spares (even if they have them).

Thanks all. Sounds very formal compared to last time when I did them at Shuttleworth. Do you only take essentials into the exam room with you or are you able to put your laptop bag etc at the front of the room? Only asking as my car may be parked some way away. Also - for Gen Nav is it now onlt the 3 charts used E(LO)1A and E(LO)1/2? More than this are used in the QB and I remember more being used in the exam last time.

When you book your exam, print off the confirmation.

It will list everything you need to know about that particular exam

Thanks ersa - that's where I'd got the info from but just wanted to make sure I didn't miss a chart. Nothing about where you can put your belongings during the exam - just prohibited materials and I'm sure I saw a statement somewhere which says belongings left at your own risk. At Shuttleworth everything was just left at the front or rear of the room.

There are lockers at the Learndirect centre. They are plenty big enough to fit a rucksack full of all your charts/equipment/lunch/beers etc.

Thanks all. As above - Learndirect allocate a locker to your exam station and the whole process is well managed by them. The CAA could perhaps have sent better (or some) directions to the centre - I'd leave reasonable time if arriving on the first day. Exams went well, Gen Nav easier than last time, some new stuff in Instruments though that and Met were generally to the taught syllabus. HPL seemed to have quite a bit of new stuff, particularly around Threat Error Management which my notes only had 1 1/2 pages. Either way, all good passes so all should have no worries about new questions or new/obscure Learning Objective priorities, at least in these subjects.

I tried to book some exams at Leicester this week and found that there are no dates available in the Portal after June.

I emailed the CAA to ask if this was a mistake and was told that they were awaiting confirmation from management that the Leicester venue will be continuing.
